My grill mod, inspired by Narpy's brilliant effort
I have finally found some time to start my grill mod, entirley inspired by the great piece of work done by Narpy, hope mine ends up looking as good as that. I'll be taking what I think is enough photos to help anyone else out byut if you want something more then shout as I will update this each time I do a bit more, which may be sporadic as I don't have a garage and the rain is back.
The starting point, a collection of bits

I started by masking it all up, putting on 3 or 4 layers at StephenO's suggestion.

Thought I should move outside for the next bit
The point of no return ..... can I glue it back in
My initial thoughts were I would be able to cut it out almost in one go, but once you get up close and personal I thought that it is maybe better to rough out first so that it leaves plenty of room to manoeuvre the Dremmel.

As I have only recently bought a black supercharged badge I cut that out whole and left it in a glass of warm soapy water for a couple of hours, came off quite easily in the end.

.... and then get closer to my line each time

During the course of this I kept trying the insert in to try and see what needed to be removed from that, it seems at the moment to be quite obvious ......... famous last words.

Looking good Dave T
Have you thought about going down the Landmark route
ie blackening the grill, side vent & wheels ?
Think that along with the black plastic on bumpers & arches it would look really 8) on a Maya.
Just a thought. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

One step ahead of you Ron, wheels are already done, but I went for anthracite rather than complete black as I have the standard 18 inch 5 spoke alloys, I thought black would be too much. Hadn't thought about the side vent or grill, although the grill is quite dark anyway. Tints are definately not far away as well, although its a remap tomorrow first! Joined the BMWX5 45e group

This is great, going to be doing my grill mod soon but with the D4 insert, I know it's slightly different but will probably help.
Nice one

Ceekay,
I got a spare D3 grill and 2010 RRS donor grill all for under £50 from the bay of E. So proper cheap really.

Cheers Radders.
I will keep a look out on the site then. Looked last week and seen a Java black (to match mine) Supercharged grille which looks great (i think) but £199 abit steep!

Good stuff.
Looks like your central triangles are still a touch too big Dave which was a trap I fell into too.
The distance between the bars on the RRS grill is smaller than that on the D3 doner so the central side triangles have to be smaller on the modded D3 than on the standard D3 grill.
I tried for ages to fit my RRS bars in place before realising there was too much tension. A quick fettle with the saw blade had everything slotting together nicely. Admittedly though, you're not quite at this stage yet but it's looming.
Also, I didn't bother leaving a piece in to join all the lower horizontal triangles together because it was too long and too floppy to support properly whilst filing, so I went with each one seperate and tapered them into the long RRS bars lower slot.
Did you say your RRS bars are anthracite??? My modded grill has shadow chrome bars but I have another RRS grill that has silver ones. There must be a few variations. Future modders beware you get the right one to match your vehicle. My grill matches the Landrover wording on the bonnet but that was more luck than judgement.
Must say £50 for both D3 + RRS grills is very cheap.Mods:

Yep, got my RRS donor grill for £21 and it came with RRS side vents which I will look to sell on. The seller did remark that I got a bargain. MY15 D4 SDV6 HSE Corris Grey - Gone
