I was asked by Radders89 how I separated my RRS grill, got the insert out.

Fortunately mine was already separated so I didn't need to do anything, however if you look in some of the photos you can see the amount of blobs of black gluey stuff they use, some of which passes through the holes of the insert and some doesn't.

Radders has asked if you could just cut through these, but again looking at them I don't think it would be the best idea as you get very close to the bit you want.

Narpy, how did you get yours apart?

This will be taking a back seat for a while now I'm afraid, my dad just died last week, ripe old age of 80, but out of the blue. Whilst we weren't close it has hit me for six, families are strange things at times. Sad Sad

But I will continue this when I get back to it. Thumbs Up

Dave, sorry to hear about your Dad passing away.
By the way, it's a good write up so far. I'm just waiting for delivery of a D4 insert from Slimer, then I'll be hacking away Mr. Green

Know what you mean Dave, same thing here last year.
Kind of puts life and the seemingly 'important' things we do in perspective, doesn't it.
My condolences to you.

The black gooey stuff are melted plastic pegs that stick through the holes and are made from extremely soft plastic. I just knocked each one off using a sharp chisel and the bars and outer section came away easily. Wink

OK, so I've got a bit further now, through some lows on this as well. I was trying to duplicate the slots from the RRS coloured part but it just won't work (for me anyway) so I eventually ended up with a rectangular opening.

Now before I go any further a point to consider if you are thinking of going down this route, if you have a light colour, then you will end up with a black line around the edge, I don't think you will notice this if it is a dark colour, so it will need painting.

Now I have it to the point of almost being there, I thought I would try it in the car to see what it looks like, and I'm really not sure that it works with a light colour, is the contrast too severe for the front like this, or gold anyway, honest opinions please. Note that it hasn't been finished and it is only loosely in place.

and this is how it is with the normal grill (luckily sourced a gold one from Dalek at a good price so saved paying for painting)

Looking good Dave, makes me want to do it to mine......runs to ebay!!

Can see what you mean about the light color tho, what about high gloss black on RRS part to make it stand out?

Will keep an eye out for you round glasgow to see it in the flesh!! Bow down

From your 3rd last photo Dave it looks fine.
There is a few different colours of RRS grill as I found out after I did my conversion.
It looks like you have the same RRS grill as I modded, shadow chrome is the colour, but there's also a plain silver one too.
It's not an exact science regards light or dark and what looks best however somebody did mention to me ( and this was something that I hadn't even noticed ) that my bonnet lettering matched my RRS insert and they complimented each other well. Pure luck I have to be honest. Rolling Eyes

I think your mod looks well Dave. Are you happy with it?
