As mentioned above, with WD you have to pay & claim. You're not in the hands of the gods then as you shouldn't be starting anything before everything is authorised. Generally you get the cheque within 2 or three weeks, but last one was about 5 days, so generally the money is in before the credit card needs paid. Re wear & tear, it's when the component is worn past it's operating parameters. Take a bearing, they'll change it when it's showing excess play, not just when it's in a thousand pieces. Probably most of my WD claims have involved wear & tear, except the turbo, so none of these would have been covered by the LR warranty. Whilst I agree with DG, it is handy to have the dealer handle the payments for something that is covered, it's handier to have much more covered and just hand over the plastic & fill in a form. Besides I get Clubcard points.

Mileage reduces your choice dramatically, ISTR DiscoDunc had major issues getting a warranty over 100k miles. I'll be there next year, but not after renewal.

They won't knock it down there and then as they have a system which has been clearly stated and you are not playing, you get a price on the internet or by phone and then say no, they call you back later, that is when you negotiate, stupid I know but that is the game, play it or lose out

Is there a 'cooling off' period with WD? how long after buying the policy do I have to wait before a claim is valid?

WD can claim straight away if you have another waranty about to expire so in effect continuation of cover or have a pre warranty inspection
if you cannot meet the criteria above then 3 months before you can claim so as to try and exclude pre existing faults

Gareth, as it is an insurance policy under fsa regulations it must come with a minimum of 14 days cooling off, possibly up to a maximum of 30 days.
Discotres also confirmed in a previous post that the EPB is covered....................................................................................................

You can claim as soon as up & running, did a claim with them a couple weeks after starting. The Tesco policy just over three years ago it was a few days, took the policy out just before going on hols, three days later turbo packed up. The gods were with me.
Re wear & tear, there is a 90 day exclusion, unless you are coming straight from a warranty, then it doesn't apply.

Only for wear & tear. If a covered component dies due to a manufacturing defect (say) and it's not due to wear & tear it's covered as soon as the cover starts. E.g if a bearing needs replaced it wouldn't be covered but if a gearbox failed (designed to last the life of the car) then it would.
I've had a couple of claims approved within a few weeks of taking my WD policy out - alarm component and an ECU. No real issues. Came to it straight from an expiring LRA warranty.____

To be clear I only got to the purchase stage of the warranty with WD and I have no experience of them beyond that other than hearing from others ...and that has been some very good and some very bad. I'm not judging them on the warranty itself .....I'm judging them on
a\ Insinuating I was lying when I gave them a price that I was looking for based on a price offered to someone else with the same vehicle and the actual words were "How do I know you are telling the truth about this price..you could be just making it up"
b\ negotiating arguing about what was going to be included to the point where I felt I was doing him the favour of buying the bleedin' warranty
c\ Not return my calls or e-mails when the policy schedule arrived and was missing the agreed items. This is the final nail that drove me to cancel TBH
d\ wanting to charge me a refund % before the active date of the warranty.

I think that you might have an assumption that much more is covered Del ...but after a long chat with a group of my service managers and the techies at GSTD I don't believe that will be the case. Their words were that their relationship with the LR warranty (LRW) provider and other providers is poles apart and they don't have to fight tooth and nail for days to get things through ....and this also means that with LRW they are able to push far more through on a goodwill basis.
Of course I could have been hoodwinked and it might turn out to be well below my expectation however after recommendation and building up the LRW to me, I don't believe that my dealer would want to lose their reputation and my business over it.
When I have a claim then I promise to give a warts and all report to all 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
