Hi just joined the forum and I have a couple of qustions.
I am going to Zermatt next month and I have found out that it is law in France and Switzerland to have snow chains in the vehicle when driving in the Alps.
Can anyone recommend any?
Can they be hired?

Not sure on it being law in france, we own a palce there and never seen this. However it is very stupid not matter what tyres you have on your car to head to the Alps without snow chains in the boot. Tip No 1 when you buy snow chains. Practive putting them on here in day light. Tip No2 . Don't let the first time you put your snow chains on be at the side of the road in -10c and in the dark
As for buying, as always check out fleabay. Got my snow chains on there 2nd hand for £60.

Bought a set last year for the wife's Caravelle from.....
http://www.snowchains.com/
Have to say they've been great, had an issue with one & they sent a new set straight out with no hassle. Easy to fit, Mrs Jester does them on her own when needed.
Also useful to have a pump for tyres, let a little pressure out & increase traction, refill when needed. Paul.

Glad someone started this thread - was just about to ask similar. Do we need two sets (4x chains) or is one set (on the rear?) sufficient? Only ever used chains on 2wd vehicles before and always on the driving wheels regardless of end.

As daft as it seems, it is recommended that if you have a 4wd vehicle and only one set of chains, that they go on the rear. The reason being that loss of control on the front causes understeer, which is easier to deal with than loss of control on the rear, which causes oversteer. Obviously it doesn't help the braking much when they are on the back. 2014 D4 XS

Discovery 3 Handbook wrote:SNOW CHAINS
Snow chains are designed for use on hard-surface roads in extreme snow conditions only, and are not recommended for off-road use. If it is necessary to fit snow chains to your vehicle, ALWAYS observe the following:
• Front wheels: Snow chains can only be fitted to the front wheels of vehicles equipped with 17 or 18 inch wheels.
• Rear wheels: Snow chains MUST NOT be fitted to the rear wheels of any vehicle.
• Snow chains MUST NOT be fitted to a temporary spare wheel.
• ONLY Land Rover approved chains should be used. These are designed for your vehicle and will eliminate any risk of damage to other components. Approved snow chains are only available from a Land Rover Dealer/Authorised Repairer.
• Always adhere to the snow chain fitting and retensioning instructions and the speed limitations recommended for varying road conditions. NEVER exceed 50 km/h (30 mph).
• ONLY fit snow chains in pairs.
• Avoid tyre damage by removing the chains as soon as the road is free from snow.
• In some driving conditions, it may be beneficial to deactivate DSC in order to maximise traction. The End

Also I have a HSE with 19inch wheels but it says only fit snow chains to 17 & 18 Inch wheels?
I can understand why you would not fit to the rear wheels though.
