Crikey I suppose it can only be caused by the tyre bead moving against the rim. Possibly dirt sitting between the bead and the rim would make it worse. Maybe it is because the wrong tyre, or a tubed tyre has been used?
I don't know really, but good job you found it before it fell apart.

So what sort of state was the tyre in then?
I can't imaging how abrasion with just rubber, even with mud involved, could cause that amount of damage to a rim without the tyre going pop first Clive

+1
My 2 rear wheels look similar but not as bad as that, I was still able to have tyres fitted to mine.

They werent from my car, thankfully. Came off a customers car who brought it in for a service and knocking suspension
The are/were 18" wheels, genuine LR ones. Car had covered 103k miles. No tubes fitted etc
The other 3 wheels were all still in 1 piece, well worn mind, but it was only this one that had looked like that...
The tyres still looked OK, albeit, with the imprints of the wheels into the tyres, they still went on and sealed OK on a new set of wheels
Pressures before the tyres were taken off were 28psi all round. Can only presume this was the cause My D3 Build Thread

All 4 wheels were well worn though, only one of them was in that condition
And the tyres that came off hadnt been run flat (And I would hope no-one would fit a tyre to a wheel in that condition )My D3 Build Thread

I had a wheel go like that not as bad as yours but the same ripple effect, it was the machine they use to take the
tyres off it wasn't working correct, they re-furbished the wheel no charge I put the spare on it. lucky the fitter
held his hand up and told me, but it looked just like yours without the bit hanging off.Always walk behind a Shooter and

I've seen at least 3 different sets like this, not bits hanging off, but badly worn. Now after changing my tyres recently I noticed that mine have done this too. After this set of tyres, I won't be putting another set on. It'll be new wheels all round. I wondered if I should use them now, but decided with the additional opinion of the tyre fitter that they would last one more set of tyres.
Anyone got any ideas what's causing this? Mine are all worn equally, and I never run them flat or even soft. The strangest thing is, on all the sets I've seen, it's only ever in the inside edge. The outside edge is perfect. Those who think running flat is the cause, why would this only happen on inside rim?D3 TDV6 HSE 2008 Buckingham Blue (current)

Looks like corrosion of the alloy to me.
Wouldn't take much to start, chip of paint then oxidising from salt, water, mud. Couldn't be 100% sure without seeing one in the metal.
That or a casting issue when the wheels are made.'05 D3 HSE, Logic 7, fridge, 4x4info, and more to come!

Perhaps its been cracked due to hitting the kerb when parking then salt etc got in and started the corrosion issue

No, it's definitely not corrosion. It's very obviously an abrasion, worn by the tyre or at least dirt trapped between the tyre and the rim, but why only on the inside rim?
It's happening equally on all rims, so unlikely to have cracked 4 wheels coincidentally on only the inside rim on each, on 2sets of wheels, plus all the others I've seen and others on here who've had the same issue. Too much of a coincidence I reckon.D3 TDV6 HSE 2008 Buckingham Blue (current)
