Every time I fill-up, I think of this thread. Managed to get the range down to zero today and filled up with 88.43ltrs. Thought I may have won a prize for that but just noticed that BarryG has beaten me already Big Cry

Is there a difference between a UK litre and an Eire litre Wink Whistle

Think this contest will end in tears - probably about 200yds from a fuel station during rush hour...... Embarassed

Rolling with laughter

Don't you have to get the Diesel system primed if you run out? I thought it was a big NO NO to run out of fuel in a diesel vehicle. Or is modern high pressure common rail different?

D2 was OK, did run out of diesel once in Portugal. Just had to run the starter a couple of times, luckily had the sense to RTBM! Embarassed

Since I first saw this thread, I have now nearly run out of diesel twice. By 'nearly run out' I mean the car has started to stutter, it's impossible to put any power on, and I've had to roll down the hill (with engine ticking over so I have brakes and steering) to the filling station which is mercifully at the lower end of Buxton.

Both times I got 84.5l in. Is my tank that much smaller than everyone elses? Or are Morrisons fleecing me? Or is everyone on the forum happy driving around in a Discovery that keeps losing power or stalling for no good reason?

Depends upon how far up the filler neck you let the level come to.......

Click once, wait 2-3 seconds, fill to the next click.

I don't start pulling the nozzle out of the tube or anything!

I can get a good few more liters in after the first click if you're patient (and no angry queues of people waiting to use the pump!). Smile

Ive done 84 ltrs from a zero trip reading - didnt do the click and wait.

As I understand it, if you are running low on fuel you are better coasting in gear, because a modern engine shuts off fuel totally and lets the inertia take over? If you put it in neutral, the car has to burn fuel to keep ticking over?

That fits. The reports of mega fills are when the tank and neck are brimming.

The poor performance you experienced was possibly the engine cutting back to half power - which it does under very low fuel scenarios....so you must have been getting close to the bottom!

Yes, and it actually stalled once. I thought I was in for a very expensive re-priming bill...

Re-priming shouldn't be necessary, as the engine should cut before you get totally dry.

Bringing this one back from the dead. Last night I went 6miles with 0 on the range readout and managed 84.57l. I let the fuel settle after each click and when I finally stopped the diesel was visible about 3" down the filler neck from where the end of the nozzle would be when filling. No way on earth I could get more than another 200ml in without it overflowing. I guess those of you getting 86l must have stretchy tanks!

Didn't do the roulette thing on purpose; just found that most rural filling stations in a 15 mile radius of home shut at 20:00 or 21:00. To be blunt, I was kecking myself!
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
