I once almost ran out of fuel in my van once. I was in the Cotswolds on minor roads, trying to cut across back to Oxford. On rural roads at about 9.30pm so if I did come across any petrol stations, they were closed. Range trip went down to zero miles. Drove for about 10-15 miles on zero miles! Drove extremely gently and coasted with clutch in as much as possible. Eventually got an open petrol station. Swore I'd never let a vehicle get that low again, as it wasn't worth the panic.
Then almost did it today in the D3, just to maximise the saving from my 5p per litre coupon at Tesco!Matt
On my way back from Banff last weekend I set off with '30 miles' remaining. As per usual, the last 30 miles disappeared at a rate of about 3 miles per mile while the sat nav usefully guided me to a filling station that was closed on Sundays.
I did eventually put a fivers worth somewhere around Fyvie or Oldmeldrum, at a place that was definitely taking advantage of the rules of supply and demand. At that point I'd had a range of 0 miles for something like 20 miles, and I was definitely beginning to sweat. Range after the fill, 0 miles. I must have spilt the lot on the floor
On attempting to fill up Dyce I the filling station ran out of fuel after I'd put in £15 worth. Since I thought all the fuel came from Scotland anyway, I was a bit concerned by this. I was starting to think I would be spending a long time in Scotland (no bad thing, obviously).
I eventually brimmed it just south of Dundee. No idea how much I might have got into it after running on empty for 20 miles, but I have got 84l into it once before.
i fliied up next to a GL500 (ugly minibus) had a chat with the fella who also has a FFRR he put in 104.3l and said it would probably last 275-300 miles Lakeland Land Rover

I put in 172.46 litres yesterday. That'll probably last me a week at current work levels!Have a nice day!

Perhaps one of the ex garage running members would like to share some insight into the accuracy or otherwise of fuel pumps??
VERY Accurate
With 42 nozzles over 5 years I never saw more than a thimbleful of variance in a weights & measures check on a 5-litre draw.
If a pump (or more specifically the metering unit) goes wrong, it tends to go well wrong and is noticed pretty quickly and will be shut down.
'Weights and Measures' are called to a site regularly whenever a pump has been worked on for maintenance. They also turn up unannounced for 'spot checks'. If anything is 'out' the unit is shut down. If this happens regularly they can shut the whole site down.

I have had 85 litres of diesel, with 30 kms to go on the fuel range.
I usually wait the fuel light comes on, and get 82 to 84 litres in.
it means taking 1 1/2 mins to fill the neck of the tank, because of frothing of the fuel, and letting the bubble disperse to fill up with liquid diesel.
That problem would be solved with the long range fuel tank

Put in 87 ltrs after an 85mph run from Perth to Usk (420 miles from memory). Was sweating a bit as it had read range 0 for miles by th etime I got to the garage. When the fuel light went off it took 30 miles to drop from range 60 to range 0!

It solves the problem mostly when filling from a normal nozzle, but only partially when filling with a fast flow. The long range tank utilises dual fillers in the existing opening. They are just big enough to take fast flow nozzles, but it means you have to pull out the nozzle, wait for the froth to subside then try again.Have a nice day!

I'm not a garage owner, but an ex-UK national weights and measures person. The pumps are required to be +/- 0.5 % when the trading standards officer stamps them, although they may go up to twice this in-service, usually in the consumer's favour. High turnover garages tend to get them "repaired" fairly often because of this, although the law prevents them "exploiting the tolerances" in their favour.

Does the the temperature of the fuel makes a small difference.
I’m sure I read / heard somewhere it was better to fill up first thing in the morning, and on a cold day, as you get a tad more out.

I filled up the other week with fuel light on and range 7 kms, got to 72 ltrs and fuel spilled everywhere . waited a minute to settle and still only got a further ltr in . I no longer have faith in the gauge or message center and usually never go below a quarter of a tank (usually)

If I recall correctly, and it's after lunch on a Friday, the total capacity of tank and neck to filler is 91 litres. The actual tank capacity is 84 litres for the diesel, usable is less by a small amount.
As Iain says, the figure quoted in the manual does not include in the neck volume.
The most I've ever put in is 84.40 litres, and that wasn't right to the top of the neck.
