My Ebay bargain Flip down DVD player
Right then peeps, lets see how this goes..
Today saw the day of my installation of my £108 (new) tan coloured 9" Dvd player from eblag..
come complete with the correct wiring to enable the inbuilt dome lights to fade out when you lock the car etc.
so then..
one sturdy tug of the rear passenger dome lights and I was left with 3 holes where the blue plastic lugs of the light clipped in..
I was going to reuse these with a screw through the middle but decided they might just pop out with extra weight of the dvd unit.
So I used some 8mm plastic (decent quality) raw plugs which have 'tangs' on as you push them in, these were a tight fit anyway and with a screw in they were not going anywhere, so no drilling the car

Next came the measuring and remeasuring of where to drill the fixing plate of the unit..

and a test fit...

Where the wire hang out was only a small slot with a grommet, but I felt this would of been a struggle to push all the wiring through, so I cut the metal with my side cutters (I got some good ones ) and bent the metal back as you see in pic and lightly hammered it flat, no sharp edges for chafing.
power wiring was pulled from the front of the rear door roof lining, took rubber stripping off on corner, unclipped the plastic capping by the rubber car mats, and also removed the lower seat belt mechanism cover the top part just came off a bit and hung there...
this enabled me to poke about 8" wire from the door frame area and reach in through the opening for the what was light unit and pull it through, just two wires needed a perm. live and switched live.
the other end was run down the door frame behind seatbelt mechanism panel, taped to one side so it doesn't get snagged/rubbed by belt. down to floor capping...
the dome light wire (blue on dvd) was connected to (black/purple)(the one next to the earth on the now redundant plug.
and the black earth on the dvd was connected to the ...um.. black wire on said plug (next to the b/p wire)
soldered, heat shrink, then all cables wrapped in tasteful blue insulation tape.
wires were run along driver seat under capping, up into void behind panel by driver knees and to behind the 'H' trim, which I am now an expert at yanking off
lighter socket, ash tray, aux socket assembly is a git to get out but if you cut out the plastic bar across the top of the ash tray, it can be lifted up and out with out removing the trim in front of it
Switched live was soldered to back of cigarette lighter, perm. live to back of Aux socket, which is not live but will be soon when I do 'the link' in the fuse box on the passenger side.
so here it is ....

and a shot from the boot, all working.

the headphones handing from the seats are now redundant (kids used these to listen to 'other' things while I was playing Radio 2)
there now hangs from them there seats 2 sets of snazzy wireless headphones
there is also an Fm modulator which enables you to tune the radio into the dvd unit and listen to Spongeblob through the HK system.... Um. as much as I like ol spongy, I think (unless I connect the touchscreen) they will be sticking to the head sets.
there are the usual outputs for sound and picture, and inputs for consoles and (which I may do one day..) the output from
the screen mounted dvr cam..
the phono plugs have each been wrapped in insulation tape to prevent any shorting in roof space and also wrapped together in one big bunch to stop them rattling around too.
So there you have it, I am very happy with it, especially the price. Kids are chuffed to bits too. The only thing I would find fault in is the dvd lid, its a bit flimsy, so I am in charge of dvd changes
But at this price I reckon I might get one for the wifes flander...
Also.. I nearly forgot (edit) unit also comes with a wireless game pad and a cd with games on it.
PM. for ebay links?? all I can say is just search for a UK seller (who also trades from China) and flip down dvd player..
Hope this post is of use to some one, but got to say I really enjoyed the whole thing today.
"I love it when a plan comes together"
Oh Can anyone guess the 'test' Dvd I was playing...
Can I also add (sorry I keep editing this post)
9" is plenty for this application, any bigger and the base plate would of been to big to fit inbetween the alarm sensor and 'sunroof'..
doesn't block the rear view mirror much either

Wonderful, thanks for this thread! I planned to do this but with a bigger unit (with 15" screen) - I've now measured up and realised that this is the biggest size that will fit, so you've saved me some serious hassle I'm going to order one of the ones you did - but in black, to match my seats.
Question - why did you need to run separate power wiring up there from the front of the rear door roof lining? Isn't the power already in the dome light enough? I'd have assumed that there is both a permanent live (to enable the push-switch to turn the light on) and a switched live (to turn on the light when the door opens). It seems that this could be all that is needed. Or did I misunderstand your description?

I wanted a a permanent or was it a switched live for the dvd 'memory' and (i cant remember fully) and it didnt have both in the roof light console.
I think its a perm live I ran as I did the 'link' in the fuse box
great bit of kit for the money, it gets used quite often and has never missed a beat
