Cat gone? Confirmed
I have had an ongoing issue with lean running issue with V8, which I was advised was a vacuum leak, which I thought I had solved after finding a whole in the dipstick.
However check engine light is on again.
Codes are:
• P0171-00 (64) System too lean (bank 1)
• P0420-00 (E8) Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1)
Which is an improvement as it was showing lean on both banks.
One thing I noticed yesterday when driving fairly spiritedly with the window partials open (apart from the glorious V8 sound) was a clattery noise at high revs, which leads me to suspect the cat may indeed be the problem.
Thoughts?==================================

Hi Robbie,
128,000 miles, 80,000 on lpg, new heads 4,000 miles ago due VSR and associated misfires, I suspect the problem has been in existence ever since.==================================

It would seem so. It would need looking it to confirm it and to rule out other potentials, but in these circumstances a damaged cat is likely.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Thanks Robbie. I have done a smoke test and the only leak I found was on the dipstick tube, any pointers as to what else I should look at.==================================

Even if the cat is confirmed I would be tempted to have the compression retested before installing a new one.

Ok, that really is confirmation.
VSR really can cause havoc.
How much does the repair cost?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
So a melted/generally cat is really that good for the environment?
What is the real cost of the mining/transport and manufacture of these pseudo environmentally friendly devices?Mark.

Cant find one below £450, forum sponsors cant help.
After speaking to Disco_Mikey, I was going to decat it for now it runs lpg so will still pass emissions test and put the pennies to a full ss exhaust with sports cats later in the year.
However having taken the cats off, emptied the contents from the knackered one from bank 1 and then turned my attention to the good side I find the precat O2 sensor is seized solid, least that's what I thought but closer examination revealed the washer to be loose, so I suspect it has been cross threaded and wound in tight possibly at the factory, I yet to move it using force, hammers and heat, seems I'll have to cut the socket of to try a long breaker bar.==================================

I've had success with the flared style of crows feet with either a breaker bar or long ratchet, so no need to cut anything. You can also get speciality sockets for O2 sensors, but I've yet to have the need as the crows feet are handy for many different jobs. As ever, heat is your friend when removing these things.
