Has anybody any idea why, after letting the D3 go to sleep and disconnecting the battery, my interior lights would still function when I opened and closed the tailgate?

I don't think that's possible, is it? We're talking perpetual motion type things here.
Perhaps it was immediately after you disconnected the battery and there's a capacitor or something that holds a bit of a charge for a little while after the battery is disconnected.

Thats what I thought, maybe some sort of residual left in the system? It was a good few minutes before I opened the boot and a couple of times thereafter in the next few minutes or so.
