Changing the lock on a tow bar

Well after selling my tow bar on here I have picked up a nice cheap tatty one from ebay that does not have the key with it. I have sent off for a replacement lock and key so thought about removing the old unit in readyness, thing is I can't see how the old unit comes off, will there be instructions of how to fit with the new one?

Clearly it would be foolish to post a 'how to' on open forum since little scum could use the information to nick tow bars at their leisure but I would be gratefull if someone could send me a private message on how to do this.

Oh and while we are on the subject, does anyone have a pair of chassis bolts they want to sell me or an idea of how much they cost from LR.

My intention is to fabricate a cycle rack to the multi height towbar (and remove the ball and stabiliser bars) and use it for that alone but it would be handy to have the whole set-up in the garage should I need to tow something.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks mate.........Talking of the job, the guy squirmed a lot when I asked him why there were no keys and what I did for a living when I collected the item.
Luckily for him there was (or seemed) a good enough excuse for a lack of keys and the old boy did seem genuine!

Thanks Martin, kind of echo's my words that its not wise to print the solution on oopen forum.

All sorted now, and i think I know why it was so cheap, some idiot had attempted to strip the towbar and grease the moving parts, put it together again wrong which meant it did not work.

Top tip, it's a complete bitch of a job to do correctly and you risk taking an eye out with a ball bearing under very good spring pressure.

However all done now and nicely serviced waiting for a new lock to arrive in the post.

Thanks again for all the help.

Need assistance on the same topic. My key broke in the lock, so I got myself a new lock. The problem is I don't know if I attached it correctly, there doesn't seem to be many options for sure, but it feels funny and I dont want to try it on until I'm sure I can get it off again.
And I don't remember how it used to work before the key broke. Anyway, I insert the key, pull the lock out and turn it to simulate attaching the towbar, but then I cannot remove the key.
And the only way to get it back to unlocked/unattached position is to give the little metal pin a clank with a hammer. Is that normal and will it work when I attach it to the Landy? I am seriously afraid to end up with a permanently attached towbar. Embarassed
Advice and moral support much appreciated!

That sounds perfectly normal to me, you can't remove the key until it's locked and it won't lock until it's in the locked position.

As long as it is not the members of the Armed Forces that also carry warrant cards. You know the sort, barrier technicians and alike.
