auto grearbox.... is this normal behaviour?
Ive never noticed this before, so thought Id best ask if this is a normal behaviour of the D3 gearbox.
when in traffic yesterday.... in Drive, foot off accelerator and crawling slowly forward, I pressed foot down to accelerate (normally not to floor) and there was a loud thud/clunk from the gearbox and then the D3 accelerated as normal.
hoping everyone else gets this, but its a new phenomena which Ive not experienced before on the D3 or my previous auto box.

I get it a little bit, and not to the extend i had in my worn out 91 RR. All land Rovers have it.
When you roll and the engine is acting as a brake - all transmission part are bedded against each other, and when you accelerate they all bed to each other again but in the other direction.
Think of two gear wheels against each other. When the driving wheel wants to change direction, or act as motor and not brake. there is a little bit of travel in the other direction before it catches again. This is what happens under your car in the geabox and diffs.
If you press throttle hard engine will start to pull hard and all will bed in the other direction with lots of HP/torque involved. This will make the sound and somtimes it can be felt too as being very violent.
Remedy is to ease on the throttle when you wish to accelerate from rolling.
If in doubt let your dealer have look, or let somebody else with a d3 ride with you to confirm normality.

Mine does this too, I think you will find that the torque convertor releases the drive to the gearbox just before you come to a halt (the engine revs will go to idle before you stop), if you apply a small amount of throttle before the vehicle comes to a complete halt, there will be a thump as the TC re-engages.
I have heard quite a thump from mine occasionaly, but usually its only slight. Easing the throttle in gently will help.

Don't get the thump, but do get a split second delay in pickup (with a tiny tiny lurch with it) if ambling along in a queue and just dab the accelerator to make a bit of progress - sometimes feels as if it's not as smooth as it could be. Mine did this until I reported it and had the s/w enhancement.
According to the Service guys the thump is reduced in the enhancement and I have certainly noticed it has largely gone now. Hope it's not my imagination

Sounds like the torque converter re-locking, perfectly normal and usually happens when the gearbox is 'coasting' in traffic, application of the throttle can also cause the gear to change down simultaneously, hence the 'thump' will be greater as the engine load is less

yer, the circumstances have to be just right (or wrong, dependent upon your viewpoint ) for it to happen...... never had it happen to me though
Used to get it happen on my Freelander TD4 auto but not noticed it on my D3.Zermatt silver 06 reg.
Gone but not forgotten !!!

thanks... strage thing was I tried to reproduce this morning taking kids to school, for first 10 mins of journey could get it to happen, then after that I couldnt. looks like it may be related to engine temp which dont make sense to me.

TC (as in Traction Control) has nothing to do with it, engine temperature (and therefore viscosity of transmission oil) will make a difference
