Just looked at mine 71K Manual 2005; very gunky - cleaned it out with a rag and then *very* carefully using a syringe extracted all the gunk from the hole.
Am doing a 400 mile run at the weekend so will post any differences in mpg following

Another one completely bunged up, entry pipe was full to a depth of 10mm.

Very notifiable difference in driving the car, looks like it was upsetting the air/fuel mixture as the car now accelerates better. Looks like this is an item to check regularly.
Thanks DSL

Just done mine, 54 plate manual with EGR valves unblanked. Found it to be well and truly gunked up. Cleaned with WD & kitchen roll. Seems to pick up a lot quicker. Will keep my eye on my MPG.

I wonder what the rest of your inlet manifolds look like Previously:

Is this the D3's version of bronchitis, all that smoking through the EGRs??
This was my next thought - cleaning the map sensor is only the tip of the iceburg - i imagine if there is so much gunk in there by the map sensor the whole of the inlet manifold is probably just as mucky.
Any ideas on how to take the rest of it apart to clean it out?

I wonder if any high mileage testing was done on these engines to see what will bung up, doubt it though.
OK techie types, if the EGRs are blanked does that mean that things will not get any worse (car has kicked its habit) or is that naive thinking?

If you have blanked EGR's there is no direct path from the exhaust to the intake so it cannot get any worse....
Unless the Turbo is leaking oil
Yes, I had the thought of what the inlet manifold looked like as I cleaned a lot of crap out of the hole the MAP sensor went into but I thought I would quit while I was ahead - for today anyway.

My new turbo wouldn't dare leak oil!! Mind you if it's like the original replacement it wont be in for that long!
PS What's the best way to clean inside the hole where the MAP sensor fits? Bit reluctant to go fiddling about in there in case I leave a big clot if gunk floating around the system. Cotton bud sprang to mind but prob not the safest way.

Well I used a screwdriver with a bit kitchen roll wrapped round it. With the amount of crap in mine you would go through a lot of cotton buds....
Below the hole you are into the air inlet manifold and the is nothing you can damage at that point as long as you don't drop anything in there.
I really want to take that area to bits to clean it all out but its a lot of work. Going to use 2 stroke at the next fill and see if that does a bit of cleaning for me.
Oil in the air pipework (from turbo) doesn't cause gunking, just leaves a thin film of oil in the system. The EGRs are the only real source of this stuff. It's not too big a job to remove the throttle valve assembly that the MAP sensor fits in - I think I posted some pictures once, but not sure. Just dosconnect the air intake pipework, egr pipes, 1 bolt (IIRC), and the whole lump pulls out of the inlet manifolds (held in by big o-rings)Previously:

De gunked mine today - yuk!. Still running with non blanked EGRs. I'm debating whether to clean the inlet manifold of crud and blank the EGRs.

You can add mine too. Hole still visible but plenty of gunk around the sides. EGR's have been blanked for over a year so must have happened before that. Probably indicates that once the gunk is there, it's there to stay.
Can't say I've noticed any difference in performance or economy though.Andy

Just cleaned mine out. 2005 manual with 47k on the clock. Fair amount of gunk but not as bad as some, could still see the hole ok. Just had the EGRs blanked so hopefully that will be that.VIN: A175A328***
