D3 Suspension Error (Help Please)

Hi guys

The suspension errors came back after the car was fully diagnosed.

It happens irrespective of the terrain (grondpad, tar road, mud etc)

The error comes up very regularly and then nothing works, no terrain response, no hill decent control, no suspension up and down, the suspension goes in to access mode and cannot be raised up, no odometer (meaning it does not count kilos, no trip meter, no speedo, it stays on zero, no diff lock, nothing works. The car can still be driven though.

Just oragne lights on the dash board, so I think it is sensor related.

When the ignition is recycled, the errors goes away, but then if you pull away then the errors re appear.

The issue is that the errors only happen whe driving very slowly in a trial, does not happen when driving fast on gravel or tar.

After much homework done, I think it can be the traction control that ignites the errors, when driving normally no wheel spin, tar or gravel the traction control kicks in and then the res of the errors start.

The traction control light comes up first, then it say traction control error, traction reduced, lowering suspension, terrain response not available, hill decent control not available.

My guess of what it could be is the following?
1. ABS sensor/traction control sensor?
2. Wheel speed sensor
3. Height sensor

So the question is what triggers the traction control? Maybe the ABS sensor?

The biggest issue is that it cannot be diagnosed because the error only occurs when driving slowly and then it clears when the ignition is recylced, so when put on a test book/fault mate/ diagnosis tool all of the sensors shows nothing is wrong, but one of the sensors is intermittent.

Has this happened to anyone.

I am desperate to get this fixed, as I cannot do any trails nor drive anywhere offroad.

Thanks for the replies

Other things can be faulty brake light bulbs, brake light switch and as in our case a break in a wire.

I would say for 99% sure it's an ABS sensor I had the symptoms a few months ago.
Start up fine drive a meter and Christmas tree and down in acces height.

I could stay driving if I after I started it up and the D3 was in normal height and then closed the Air syspension exhaust valve with my Faultmate. It still gave all the errors. No ABS, NO TC, No stability program, no offroad system etc.

If you don't have a fault code reader to read the actual faults when it occurs. The dealer should be able to see old faults.
My abs sensor was worn on the wheel side. Dirt can get to the ABS ring and wear your sensor away. Big Cry

The sensor was only 40 euro or so and you can fix it yourselves as soon as you know which one it is.

Could also be a broken wire in the n/s/f wheel arch. Seen that fault many times now Thumbs Up

The abs sensor is needed for the ABS off-course so if a sensor fails your ABS does't work.
If you ABS doesn't work your stability program doesn't work.
Also wihout the ABS sensor the traction controll does't work.

Still no real problems as you can still drive.

But as TC and ABS also giving signals to the Off-road system that stops working too.
The pity that is takes care off the air suspension so that stops working too.

More or less the only messages I didn't get was engine and gearbox problems but then I didn't try command shift.

If it is a wiring problem I would expect it to fail directely after start-up like if you don't have a sensor attached. But as you mentioned it fails directely after driving I would suspect a sensor.
If it is inetrmitted however, it could be a wire too.

Any final solution to this

Did you ever get to the bottom of this fault, I have exactly the same and am hoping it is just the ABS sensor as you suggest ?

thanks

Hi There

It wasnt any of the sensors as was predicted by the other guys. I kept getting the U0122 error, lost communication with vehicle dynamics control module.

Somewhere there is an electrical connector that is expanding under heat, for example if you have been driving for about 45 minutes offroad slowly.

Initially I thought the connector is located on the transfer case, as it was the only electrical connector that looked different from all of the other connectors on the car and under heat that connector can expand and not make contact with the pins.

The fault is still not resolved. I dont know where to look any more.

I think I am going to pour 20 liters of petrol over the car and set it alight and enjoy a nice fire and then fight with the insurance, that seems to be my only option. I had the car to the dealers and to many indies and they cannot help me, no one knows where the problem is.

As Mikey says, this is where the wires break. Behind the wheel arch liner.

It is also very interesting to me that the faults only occur after some time driving, when there is a bit of heat under the car.

Diagnostics should show the health of the compressor, it may be on the way out. It should be able to put out 240psi.
If the system detects that the compressor is not reaching a minimum pressure it goes into fault mode.

There is a new compressor, fitted 2 months ago and there is nothing wrong with the compressor.

The common fault that I am getting is U0122 Lost communication With Vehicle Dynamics Control Module, and other Lost Communication faults.

I dont know where to start looking. I have checked al of the connectors.
