From our equivalent of the AA. It has also been widely reported in the German media (TV, radio, newspapers and motoring magazines).
So if you are tootling along the road in Germany and some some falls, you are driving with ileagal tyres.The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Technically no - M+S tyres are not cold weather/winter tyres.
To be fair, you're less likely to get stuck using them, but control, steering and braking are still likely to be inferior to what you would get on a proper winter compound.
Winter tyres don't even need chunky tread patterns - it's all down to the rubber compound used and also the tread pattern/sipes that provide enough traction on ice/snow to pass the tests needed to be able to mark them with the mountain/snowflake symbol as winter tyres.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

I been digging half the night and got to the conclusion that as long as you got M+S or / and snowflake on yer rubber you on the safe side from legal point of view !!! according to new law!!!
besides our winters never been light and I know that even proper winter rubber does not "save" yer ass on very icy road

Or deep snow. Once you get over 10 - 12" of snow forget it. You may make progress forward for a short time but you will start bellying and grind to a halt. Anything over that getting turned is a nightmare as you end up getting cross rutted and stuck, you can't climb out of the ruts, even with MTRs. Always carry a snow shovel!

One law that many are not aware of is:-
GPS & Radar Detectors It is against the law for any driver to use or to carry a device which can interfere, predict or detect the location of any official traffic monitoring device, including and especially mobile or static speed cameras. The standard fine for this offence is €75 (and 4 points if you have a German Drivers Licence).
GPS or sat navs which give warnings about fixed speed camera locations are not permitted either, this function must be deactivated before the navigation system can used.

Andy, talking of rubber, do you do comdoms with all-terrain tread, for those occasions when you slide into the mud? Run silent, run deep!! HM Submarines Conqueror, Churchill, Renown, Ocelot, Porpoise, Onslaught.

So this means that the new law that Ken and JF Lux mentioned isn't correct then?
If it is, and even visitors must use winter tyres, then tyres marked only with M+S will not cut the mustard grzesiul - you will still be breaking the law (although I still think you'd have to be unlucky to get fined if you're driving a 4x4 and don't get stuck)...2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Just remembered that grzesiul is an IT chap....
How can we put this....
M+S tyres != Winter tyres
M+S tyres <> Winter tyres
i.e. in the eyes of the law and european regulations, they are not even close to being the same thing when winter tyres are required to be used.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG
