One theory I was looking at is if the new bolt that comes with the tensioner is the correct length as the hole goes right through the mounting plate. If the bolt was to long only by a few threads then this would be enough to put the plate under stress in the way its broken.
Bodsy needs to check on the engine block to see if there is evidence that the bolt has fouled the block when fitted with the new tensioner...

That's a good theory, and perfectly plausible, but it doesn't account for the ones that have failed after 50-60k and never had a belt change...My D3 Build Thread

Its a sound theory, but the bolt doesn't protrude out of the hole that it's in. Had this discussion when going through scenarios. Will double check again next week though. Bodsys Brake Bible

For the purposes of a discussion, I'm going to make what I'm pretty sure is a stupid suggestion.
If the plate could be removed (jury still out on that), could an expert aluminium welder weld extra alloy strips in all the gaps behind the tensioner mount and strengthen it that way? I know it risks warping etc, but is it at least possible in theory?Dr. Ian Malcolm:

FYI, found this clip on You Tube which is perhaps yet another 07 plate D3 with what looks like an identical 'break' (see close up at about at 1 minute mark):
is this what your on about ??
as this is part of the oil pump which is only roughly £50

Don't tell me, part is £50 but requires body off and 12 days fitting time right?
Can you see if this plate has updated since/before 2007 Nick?Dr. Ian Malcolm:

it would also be interesting to know if the oil pump is the same as the one used in the Jaguar and other versions of the engine. Damn, now there is this to worry about as well, I have a MY2008 (8A)...
looking at Nicks drawing it looks like it should not be more than an hour to change the plate providing it can be done at the same time as the belts if its accessible.
My belt is due soon and I am going to have a close look at this and might even change it at the same time if we can.
It seems funny that LR have changed the plate three times since MY07...
Bodsy can you check on your engine to see if you think its possible to change when doing the belts.
