Could this happen to a 55 plate with 91k on clock? If the gearbox changed to 3rd gear (default gear after transmission fault) at 80mph would this put enough strain on engine to cause it to fail?

Hate to say this but i would worry a lot. Landrover have had mine for over 3 months and i have taken it to the very highest level just had word back from jeremy hicks office saying that they will not be helping me with this matter. Absolute joke, everything they asked me for i gave them and they kept on looking for a excuse not to help. Well at least now i have all the letters ,all the emails etc to show the world how they will go out of there way not to help you if anything goes wrong with your discovery. Im going to contact anyone who will listen inc local papers etc to warn people about this. Will even go as far as saying i will put a banner on one of my vans and leave it near there head office after all i only live 2 min away.

Just before Christmas my '57 died. Fortunately I was right outside the house. There the fortune ended...
As I suspected, it turned out the cam belt pulley had snapped off
Got it over to Stratstone, Notts who have managed to negotiate 50% towards the replacement engine from LR. Quite rightly so in my opinion. Bought it approved used, with full LR history 3 years ago, and had it serviced by LR every year since - including the 105K at Stratstone last year.
Just waiting for the new engine now. Should I ask them to replace the rear brake pipes while the body is off?

I would consider whilst the body is off:-
Check EGRs & turbo & turbo pipes
Check High Pressure Fuel Pump
Consider changing intercooler hoses, particularly the 2 small ones, which are difficult to get at for silicone.
Replacing and possibly upgrading intercooler. At very least give the intercooler & radiator, a bl..dy good clean.
Replace rear brake lines
Check anti-roll bar bushes & shims - takes around 60 seconds with the body off.
Check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine
Wash chassis & underside of body, reapply Waxoil where necessary.
Remove the turbo, fit new modified actuator rod. Take out the studs and drill the threads out to 8mm. Use 2x M8 flange bolts to refit. This aids future turbo removal massively, and is also much quicker.
Check all suspension bushes particularly rear ARB & rear upper arm.
You can get carried away with suspension bushes. Most common failures are the rear uppers and front lowers. Body off makes no difference to front lowers, but the rear uppers are 5 mins a side, as opposed to 2 hours with the body in place. A perfect excuse to upgrade to the RRS arms
Most of the above cribbed from posts here by others.

I have replied to another topic yesterday regarding my Discovery 3 2007
I have a D3 2007 with 85k miles on the clock, last year when I had the car serviced I got the timing belt replaced as the car was 7 years old - I had this done at the same time I MOT'd and serviced the car.
On Monday morning I went to work as normal and parked in my office car park, later that evening I went to start my Disco and it wouldn't start, all I got was a clunk - so I knew something was wrong and I decided to call out the AA...... Who took my car to my Land Rover Service centre the following morning.
I received a call from Land Rover yesterday after noon stating that I need an engine replacement....... I really don't know what has caused this, what I did notice is that there was a peace of metal between the fan blades (this I believe was the tensioner)
My Belt was replaced 12 months and 2 weeks ago, Land Rover States that this is out of warranty and it's going to cost me £9,500 to replace my engine.
Since I have had this car I have looked after it and have maintained it well and have made sure that it has been serviced........
Inorginally took my car to Stratstone instead of my usual service centre as I bought a new Discovery on 3rd feb (last month) and I was hoping to take delivery of my brand new car early next week, as Stratstone do not do my last service and cam belt change they didn't want to look further as it could have caused problems...... So my original service centre picked up my car this morning to enable them to look at the car.
They have also come back and stated that the cam belt tensioner has snapped off, and this means that they engine needs replacing...... They have contacted LR service who have advised that there is nothing they can do!
I can believe that so much damage can be caused due to this part failing!!
I'm now worried sick...... And also gutted that I may not get this damage repaired - as the cost is too high for me to repair and also get my new car!

Bad news indeed.... there seem to be more and more reports of this catastrophic failure which appears to be caused by the inherent weakness of the oil pump case.
Firstly, can anyone confirm that our contributions have been used to pay for a metallurgical report on the aforementioned engine component and what the results are? If the report has not been commissioned yet - why not?
Secondly, my commiserations on your plight. I sincerely hope that Landrover will accept that the destruction of your engine is due to a weak engine component and give you a replacement. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to end up in your situation.
I was very fortunate to discover a crack in my oil pump casing (where the pulley attaches) and have it replaced before it failed. This was at 33,000 miles!
I have come to the conclusion that owning a Discovery of this era is a (financial) disaster waiting to happen and I have recently sold mine in favour of a Landcruiser. If you are happy to pay for a comprehensive warranty or be lucky enough to be able to afford a newer model then great.... but if you are just a normal guy with a normal sort of income who aspires to own a Discovery then I would consider other options.
I wish you the best of luck with resolving the issue. 2007 Base D3 - Buckingham Blue

Was it a full land rover service history car?

Bodsy wrote:theres not enough space for the belt to come off and get behind the tensioner when you have the cover on not without causing visible damage to the cover or the belt. if it did come off an go behind the tensioner, somehow and the engine still running then the belt would just be tight and miss the tensioner altogether....
the belt is too stiff to wrap around any component IMHO.
Break pattern looks pulling down (as you would expect the pressure to be) and not up as the larger part of the break is at the top where its not strong enough between the bolts....
Could the break have happened because the new tensioner was tightened on too much... thereby weakening the already weakly designed casting?.... just a thought

It certainly wouldn't help the situation, as the torques setting is quite low and could be over tightened Istr only 25nm. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hello, my name is John and I've just purchased a Discovery 3 TD v6. The car is an 05MY with full stamped (mainly LR) service history and lots of work under LR warranty/recall that I've been able to get printed evidence for from my local dealership.
The car has just turned over 104K miles and is in need of cambelt replacement and service. I'm going to do all fluids/filters myself, but having read the issues people are having with the oil pump casing, I'd like to entrust the job of changing the oil pump casing, cambelt and pulleys/tensionsers to a trusted indie. Granted my vehicle isn't in the prime range for failure, but I'd rather play it safe and have the latest pump casing installed.
I haven't got enough posts to PM Flack - but if he spots my post and wouldn't mind getting in touch with a price to the do the job (if willing to travel to Liverpool) that would be great. Alternatively, I'll travel to Preston - it is in fact where I purchased the vehicle from!

Well the local specialist didn't suggest changing the oil pump on my car - quoting a sky high rate to do it, so have gone simply for belt/pulleys/tensioner/water pump and a noisy front wheel bearing.

I'd talk to Flack before committing to having the work done elsewhere.
