There is only one way to make sure that you have the timing correct and that is to remove the starter motor and the blank and fit the flywheel locking tool and then both timing pins in the camshafts, if this is done then the timing can't be out.

Cam belt tensioner broke
Hi all
I have been following this as the tensioner on my 2007 Discovery has sheared off and I now need a new engine. I contacted LR, they have inturn got a dealer to carryout an inspection. The dealer has just got back to me stating that LR are not willing to do anything due to the cars excessive milage (155k). Has anyone got anywhere with LR on this issue or can anyone advise me on how to proceed with LR.

Yes, belt done at about 95-100k. It has a full service history (main Dealer then a LR specialist)> The main dealer that has carried out the investigation has stated that there is no issue with the service history, everthing that should have done has been.

just noticed this morning that the pre 07 oil pumps have now superseeded to the later pumps
so all oil pumps for TDv6 D3 from 54 plate to introdution of D4TLO has left the building.......

Does this suggest that those of us with pre-07s - due for timing belt replacement - should also consider replacing the oil pump at the same time?

personally i don't see why
i can't recollect seeing any posts about pre 07 oil pump tensioner mounts breaking
i think its more of an alignment of supersessions from LR so they only have the 1 pump for all years now
just thought i'd update as i found it TLO has left the building.......

Nice one. I couldn't see a good reason to change it either but just thought I would check to see if there was a TSB or similar on this part. Makes sense to align and have just the one pump for all MYs.

I had the timing belts changed on Monday. I was phoned up by the garage while they were doing the job (I was away shopping): They said that they now did a crack test on the tensioner mount when changing timing belts. They thought they might see a faint trace of a crack. They quoted about £1800 to do the job. I would also leave the car until the next day because they didn't have the part in stock. I live about 300 km away from the dealer, so that was a little inconvenient. I thought about it for a while, and phoned them up again and got the mechanic on the phone: He said that the crack wasn't very obvious, and when I asked him if he thought it was OK, he said yes.
I remembered reading this post earlier, and that MY05 has had far less instances of failure than 07-08 models. So I decided to decline having the mount changed.
My impression is that the garage wasn't really sure it was a cracked, and was making sure to cover themselves in case something happens later. When pushed, they wouldn't say it should be changed, and that it probably would be OK. But that it could be very expensive if it failed. Now I'm sitting here second guessing myself. Should I be worried or will it be OK. If I sell the car, what do I tell the new owner?

Can anyone say for how long they continued to use an inferior oil pump?
My D3 - was built on 2nd July 2008 - VIN: LAAA179A 494nnn - should I replace the oil pump when the belts are done?
The car wasn't registered until April 2009, but I assume the 7 years for belt changes etc. runs from the build date, not the registration date?

As far as I know all these things are from registration date. It doesn't matter that your car sat in a field for 8 months before it was sold, like mine.
