Oil pump

Thanks all, appreciated.

I am still unsure what to do because I had my old 300TDI break down a few years ago in Portsmouth with Cylinder head gasket fail on a trip back from France with a 3.5 Ton trailer attached fully loaded with machine equipment. Bit of an 11 hour epic getting back on the back of an AA truck to Chesterfield. So after that nervous about getting stuck again.

Like a few have mentioned the pump is reasonable price so I have ordered all the bits from LR today, including a new tensioner bolt and will ponder the rest of the week if I want to crawl around the engine again! Wishful thinking that just buying the bits will make it all ok!!

I asked the chap at LR about the pumps and he said that mine was still the original number but later ones had been changed a few times but did not know why, hmm?? So that seems to be the response others have had on this thread.

Anyway my shiny new Haynes manual has arrived today and this lot is in it so need to get some grubby finger marks on it!

Off the subject the parking brake warning lights popped on today which just seems to sum it all up Big Cry . This though has been an annual event over the last 3 years and always starts after the roads have been salted followed by rain. Looks like I will have to have a look at the wiring loom, deep joy..... Yawn

Hi Guys

Firstly let me say , some of you guys on here are legends . I am on here often and have found TONS of very useful info.

I wanted however to inform you , that down here is South Africa. I have 2005 TDV6 HSE , full service history
from LR and then Indie after warranty . it has had a few issue's that have been a pain but most have been resolved from the info you post.

Last week friday , while highway driving + - 80 km hour the engine lost power , engine fault light came on , stopped on the side of the road. it was towed back home and we started looking for the fault . as I had not read this yet . we took the cover off and noticed the exact same problem. the belts and tensioner was replaced at required interval. the car now has just over 200 000 km. Engine VIN 6A35XXXX .

New oil pump etc is all available , but what other damage happens in the engine ????? Censored Censored

Mine went at low speed. Interference engine so expected some damage. Put new cambelt and tensioner on and she fired up and sounded great. After 10 mins though oil light came on.
Took the rocker covers off and found top bearing cap of right hand bank snapped.

also noticed the roller rocker had been smashed and displaced, causing uncontrolled oil flow through the lifter. (Needle bearings from the roller rocker found in the sump- LR had no idea what they were Shocked )

So considering, minimal damage breathed a sigh of relief, However cam bearings are line bored - all assembled at the factory and reamed out for an exact match, so you cannot just swap the broken cap. I bought a reconditioned head from a company in manchester.

Moral of story is that it is possible you may have got away with minor damage, don't go straight to thinking you need the whole engine replaced. If you do, please be careful around these auction site replacement engine firms. My failure was down to accidently re-fitting the old tensioner bolt, and it snapped a week later Rolling Eyes

new parts will be colelcted today along with the manual . I have the cam timing pins , but not the flywheel pin
They also cant be bought or rented in SA . or not that I have found at least.

If anyone has the dimesions of this tool and is willing to share , I would greatly appreciate it.

After it ia all back together , I will hold thumbs and see what happens.

Splitpin, if you were driving 80km/h I would imagine you have sustained more damage tbh.

Mine went at a similar speed, LR replaced the engine for me. (Free)

I have just booked mine into local main dealer for 105k, I asked them if they had experienced any timing belt tensioner failures, and they said they had seen one on an early car, which had been overtightened by another garage when they changed the timing belt.

I asked them how much extra to change over the oil pump casing for the latest part, and they said an additional £540 on top of the already substantial quote for the service!

So, I booked in to be done over chistmas, and asked them to kindly not over tighten my tensioner bolt! At least if it does let go, its never been anywhere else than the same main dealer.

Gareth how much did they want for the 105k service ? Stratstones were doing a deal for £599 inc vat for both belts and service. Not sure if they are doing this anymore though, could be worth calling around ?

Not anymore! I made some phone calls this morning, and Stratstones Bury first quoted £900. I asked if that really was their best price, and she said they would match any verified local offer. However, as Guy Salmon in Stockport had already offered me a price of £800, and is nearer to me, they were the obvious choice.

I also phoned Landranger, a good reputable independent specialist in Stockport, and he also quoted £800.

Could not get Williams to answer the phone.

That's about what I was quoted today, Gareth.

I phoned round a few places to get prices for 90,000 and 105,000 mile services as I'm not sure what to do about this whole belt thing after reading this entire thread again for a second time. Big Cry

Lancaster LR Reading quoted me ~£900
Hunters LR Southampton quoted me ~£925
Harwoods LR Basingstoke never bothered to call me back = No Sale

Rovertune Reading quoted me for a 105,000 service WITHOUT the belts initially Shocked and then quoted me another price for the belts on top. Looking at about £700 from them including belts. Thumbs Up
Brooklyn 4x4 quoted me £980 which was the most expensive out of the lot. I can only assume they don't like doing this job. Whistle
West 4x4 also quoted me ~£700 including belts. Thumbs Up

Do you pay the £100 - £200 extra and go LR or do you stick with your local indy? Do you get any better recompense if you use a LR dealer to do your belt change and you subsequently experience this tensioner mount failure?

I'm running a 2006MY (VIN 6A413***) on an 07 plate here. First registered March 2007 and now done 85,000 miles with full LR service history up to 60,000 service after which I used my local indy (West 4x4, Swanmore) at 75,000 service. I have every receipt from new. So, it will be 6 years old in March next year. I love the car and have every intention of keeping it for longer. It's the first car I've ever owned from new and can't justify getting rid of it for a D4 at their current residuals.

Based on what I've read here, the 6As are not as susceptible as other model years (2007s, in particular) but they are certainly not without incident (as Splitpin above illustrates).

Do you think it's worth getting the belts done early in my 90,000 service or best to stick with the schedule and wait until 105,000?

hi there I have a 57 plate with 117.600mls on her although the cam belt was done early@ 96000 after reading these posts would it be worth having the cam belt changed again and geting the bkt changed @ the same time and while the sump is off is it worth getting the main bearings changed as ive heard these can cause a problem as well it might cost a bit or should I stop worying and just keep enjoying any advise very much appreciated Bow down

Do you have manual or Automatic? There are 2 different location tools to hold the flywheel for timing. If you let me know which you have I will post dimensions tomorrow when I get back into work.

I want to use the dealer because my car has been serviced by them from new.

I don't think it worth having the belt done early unless you know its had a hard life. A hard life for a timing belt is difficult to judge, because it simply goes round and round! I suppose lots of wading or dust would affect it, maybe extreme high or low temps also.

£500 quid to change the pump casing seems a bit steep to me, but I will take my chances, the technician at Guy Salmon told me that they have changed loads of belts on all model years and never had an issue.
