The one in the vid, which looks very familiar, has a broken crank.

Could that have been caused because the tensioner came loose? Or is it more likely that things happened the other way around - after the crank siezed, there was a huge tension on the belt and the tensioner bracket is the weakest part of the linkage. Hard to say that was the root cause - could have been low oil, water in the engine, bad crankshaft, blocked oilway...

Ian have you had the sump off yours to see if everything is OK below?

Remember, he did sell it over two years ago.

Thumbs Up @ DiscoStu, although there does seem to be an imbalance of 07 plates suffering with the issue.

Mine is an 07 and the crank went, only I could hear it 'picking up' and stopped the engine before it broke.

I'm not saying the tensioner isn't the fault, just that it's going to be hard to prove. Even if the design weakened it, there's nothing to say it's not the crank seizing (or some other fault) that caused it to fail.

I did notice the broken crank, and must admit I thought the same, that maybe that caused the tensioner to break , but if its the crank that is picking up, does that mean that its now 20 cars that have had the crank seize or partially seize and cause the tensioner to fail... that puts a different spin on things..

Its not good no matter which way, especially seeing my Vin # is in the range that has the failed tensioner's Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

I dont get it........How could a broken crank cause the cambelt to place enough force on the idler for it to break the mounting plate?? would it not take tons of pressure on the holding bolt to break the mounting...... Seems to me that vibration over many years may have weakened the casting.......

'54 plate - 78,000 miles - automatic

Cam belt and tensioners replaced 6 weeks ago - view pics in my gallery to see what happened to engine last Thursday.

If you think it's just 07s I'd have a rethink.

Did a main dealer do yours and have they accepted any responsibility. This has the makings of a serious issue for Land Rover, as it seems relative the number of people who post there are quite a few failures.

The work was carried out at my friend's garage.Judging by what i've read on here, I'm not putting it down to shoddy workmanship on his part, but more to manufacturing faults and where they could be produced at the cheapest cost.

I'll know more about the damage next week after a new oil pump/casing has been fitted.

Then ......................Hope springs eternal.

Cripes !! I've got a timing belt service coming up next Shocked I have to be honest, I'm nervous about it. It would be great to know what makes this happen.

Mine is definitely going to main dealers.
