This is double counting. If you pre-heat your engine you will use less fuel in the first 5 miles than if you hadn't done so. It still means that using the FBH to pre-heat costs more but not £150 a year. The benefit of course is personal comfort and reduced engine wear.

Smoke glorious smoke everywhere after 2 years of not firing up. Very Happy

After last years bismall failure of no smoke i decided to remove the heater and stripped it down. on strip down i found the glow pin had split in 2. No wonder it would not work.... Neutral

Hunted round found a second hand one. swopped the internals into mine and refit, was going to test fire and prime this weekend but hey no need it fired up this morning and got some crazy looks off people due to the amount of smoke coming out.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Now footnote the glow pin is not available from Webasto or JLR as only built for JLR. so if anyone else has the same problem the only way is to replace the unit i am afraid. Big Cry

But surely the 0.6 litres per hour is at full blast? How likely is it that the FBH will be called on to run at full wack for half an hour when the engine is also running or have you got the remote control?

To pre-heat or not to pre-heat, that is the question.

The person posting that it costs up to £150 a year to pre-heat the car was not taking into account that a pre-heated car will have better fuel consumption in the first few miles from starting than one that has not been pre-heated.

My guess is that the actual extra cost of using a pre-heat (via remote or gsm box) is probably more like £50 a year and for that you also get less engine wear and you are cosy to boot.

Perhaps this need a separate thread Martin?

Winter has Officially arrived in Clanfield.

Started the D3 up this morning, mucked about for a minute or so putting the bin out, and was greeted by the reassuring smell of burnt Diesel that reminds me of the Paraffin lamps we used to use during power cuts and camping as a kid.

It’s always a bit of a relief when it lights up on the first cold morning of the year, it’s one less thing to fix, but does mean the colder weather is on it’s way.

Also, the FBH can start up on very cold days even when the engine apparently warm, to maintain engine temp. If the air temp is below 6, and the coolant temp drops below 75 degrees, it will cut in. The TDV6 is very efficient, and does not produce an excess of heat. It has different power levels, including an idle setting.[/quote]

Same here, even though I know what to expect it looked as though it was on fire this morning as there was clouds of smoke billowing from the small exhaust port and under the bonnet (small leak in the flexi) as it fired up for the first time!!

Mine too, 3° C on the dash this morning.

Started the engine (sluggishly !) and was greeted with "system fault" briefly on the dash, this quickly went off though so I assume that since I've been messing about in the car (hard wiring my Blackvue) and not driven any distance for the few days, the battery was probably a bit low.

Anyway much to my relief since I'd spent a large portion of Monday repairing the aux fuel pump wiring, that familiar roar ensued after a minute or so and I could feel the heat from the FBH exhaust.

Odd thing was though, it stopped working about this time last year and hasn't worked since, presumably due to the wiring fault, but on start-up this morning there was no smoke at all and very little smell, not that I'm complaining Razz

Mine fired up yesterday with the dash temp showing as 5C.

No smoke whatsoever which I thought a bit odd but it is definitely running as can hear it and the little exhaust pipe got hot. Very Happy
