Had the car nearly 2 weeks now and no sign of the FBH working. Got dragged off into town today by SWMBO, 1/4 mile down the road and she starts complaining about the smell. "Wot smell I asked", "smells like paraffin she says". "don't know what it is, can't smell anything" . Been bunged up with a cold since I've had the Black Beast. FBH working fine, cold to toasty in 10 mins.

Please bear with me on this, I'm a relative noob to the D3 world!!!
A couple of times my FBH has fired up when the temp. display is showing 5 deg or less.
Engine and cabin warm up relatively quickly as expected.
However, even after a 30 mile motorway run, when I turn the car off and get out, I have noticed the FBH still runs on for a short period before shutting down.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't it shut down whilst driving once the coolant reaches a set temperature (63 deg)??
Any Ideas??
Cheers, Chris.
The FBH will run all the time the outside temp is show as below 6deg.
It runs at full (5kW) until the engine coolant temp is around 85deg then drops back to a maintanance mode.
If the outside temp is below 6deg and you switch off the engine you will hear the FBH go through a shut down routine.
If the Outside temp is below 4deg and you are stood at tick-over the engine temp will go cold unless the FBH is working.

All except the first one ... As it actually generates a fault when you unplug it
That part in the LR document is wrong
There are a few mistakes in that publication.
But yes unplugging the FBH before the vehicle goes to sleep will create an error that counts towards lockout.
Three errors or 'non starts' and the FBH locks out, creating an error that can only be reset by T4 (on a good day) or faultmate or the Webasto PC prog...so what can I fiddle with today that ain't broken ...?

Interesting. Therefore, is this incorrect:

press the flame symbol on the timer, wait 3 seconds and pull the 20a fuse, wait 3 secs reinsert the fuse and then press the flame button again wait 3 seconds and pull the fuse again, wait 3 seconds and re insert the fuse the FBH should then fire up as soon as the fuse connects
what i found was that you needed to do this a couple of times and press the button to fire it up and all was well
Therefore, is fitting of the timer, also a way to reset the FBH?2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

It may be possible that the Webasto timer module will over-ride/reset any errors/lockouts.
I don't have a timer module so I havn't had a play so don't know
If the FBH tries to start and is unsuccessfully, it will shut down - one Lockout Error is created.
Two more unsuccessful starts and the FBH will lockout.
Power failure while the CAN is active (i.e. the vehicle isn't asleep) also counts as one Lockout Error.
Because the FBH stores errors in NON Volatile Memory, removing the power to it WILL NOT erase these errors - regardless of vehicle asleep/awake, ignition on/off, standing on one leg, wearing red socks etc
A Lockout can only be reset by T4 (on a good day if you are lucky) or fault mate or the Webasto PC programme
The FBH on the D3 as is, is an auxiliary heater, so only works when the engine is running and the external temp is below 6deg. It was designed to work as a Parking heater and aux heater when the vehicle was first launched, but LR couldn't get the FBH and the heating controller to work together (German product & British vehicle not talking the same loudenSprache).
If the FBH is not working and the external temp drops below 6deg the engine does not produce enough heat to keep the temp up on the guage! It runs at full load (5kW) until the engine coolant temp reaches around 85deg. On the temp guage this is the middle (half way between cold and hot).
Then it drops back to Part load (2.5kW).
It then cycles full load, part load until either the engine is turned off or the external temp rises above 6deg.
When the engine is turned off the heater then shuts down, going first into 'burn out' then 'cooling'. This is what you can sometimes here - it can take up to 30seconds to complete.

Awesome - many thanks - very comprehensive
Is the FBH the only place the faults are stored or are faults stored at a 'higher' level on some sort of CPU?
Mine has been working perfectly, but after a number of recent false starts (puffs of smoke), it's now not evening attempting to fire. I've all the parts to complete the Timer mod, so was going to do that anyway. If the timer mod will also clear the faults - then it will be time well spent, rather than heading to a dealer to clear the faults.
Thanks again,

The FBH faults are stored only in the NVR of the FBH - no where else.
Mine works faultlessly until I almost ran the D3 out of diesel.
Three non starts and it locked out. LandRover couldn't get the FBH to work.
The Webasto PC Prog did. I have got a number of FBH to work OK that LR said needed replacing!
Try the timer mod let me know if it works.

Many thanks!
Def going to do the timer in the next day or so, so will let you know. The Webasto s/w route isn't really a go-er for me as we only have Macs at home and work, so I'd need to install Windows or something...
Mine works fine for weeks and then suddenly cuts out in the starting process and then locks out http://vimeo.com/8117430
If this process described above works, then it could be worth installing a remote push button for the power fr the FBH or something, so that it can quickly be reset...
Many thanks again,

Mine hardly ever worked until I got the oval timer, it now fires up everytime it should. I think a dose of additive such as Redex has also helped by clearing the gunk out of the burner, as this ordinarily will go stale throughout the rest of the year that the heater is not used.
