There is significantly more rubber in the Grabber, especially in the off shoulder areas. The new Grabber tire has a third ply that gives it greater strength and stability to withstand more off road abuse.

Unfortunately there answer doesn't actually help at all Confused

The AT2 also had a three ply sidewall - note that they don't actually say "an extra ply".

The shoulder is also not really the sidewall which is where the AT2 used to puncture easily (even with a 3rd ply).

And if we get into marketing word-games, then I guess you could also justify the AT having more rubber in the shoulders than the AT2 due to the fact that it has a more closed tread pattern (although it is in all fairness likely to have more rubber on the inside).

I think they have made a cock-up with the e-mail....there is no way the ATs are 80% off-road....no way on earth. Rolling Eyes

I think you'll find that they are 80% on-road and 20% off-road..... Thumbs Up

Apart from towing a horse box across fields I don't go off road but do want a tyre that's better in the snow than my Wrangler HP's. Is this Gneral AT the tyre to get or would I be better with the Pirelli ATR?

I know what you are saying about advertiser speak but they say clearly there is more rubber in the off the shoulder area and a third ply of rubber. I guess you may be right if the off shoulder area you are referring to is the tread and not the sidewall but not sure that makes sense. The 80/20 bit did surprise me but I thought if they have significantly improved wall strength and rigidity then that would suit off road more than the AT2s. That doesn't fit with the appearance or their spiderweb diagram though. Those suggest on road qualities. I can't see how you would be more likely to aquaplane going over rocks!!

PaulP, I'm wondering do you actually have any of these tyres yet?

I agree it looks like they are talking about the wrong tyre though, as the AT has a 2 ply sidewall, as I demonstrated with this photo earlier in the thread.

No - and I'm not likely to....my interest is more from a technical point of view if I'm honest as I loved the old AT2 but just wish it were a bit more hardwearing on the rough stuff Thumbs Up

I was talking about the right tyre, it's just that I was talking b0ll0cks Embarassed Laughing

I got my wires crossed Embarassed - please accept my apologies.... Thumbs Up

I remembered that the new AT and older AT2 had the same number of sidewall plies (as you said, after seeing your previous photo Thumbs Up ) and after seeing that they apparently had 3 plies in the previous e-mail, I just got a bit mixed up.

As Andy says, it seems that the reply was talking about a completely different tyre Laughing

I too was a BIG fan of the AT2, and still am, to the point where I changed my rims so I could have them on my D3. But now having the new ones on for a couple of thousand miles, and tried them for myself, they really are impressive. I think they really are every bit as good as the AT2, and I have used several sets of AT2 in the past. I wasn't sure how good they'd be after only seeing pictures, but for some reason they look loads better than expected in the flesh, and the performance seems to match the impressive looks.

As for being only 20% off road, I definitely disagree there. Earlier in the thread there were claims that the ATR is a 50/50, so if that's true, then these must be at least 50/50 looking at the tread.

I have sent an email back to general tyres to get clarification.
We shall see. Agree with Andy though. His suggestion of the wrong tyre compared to AT2 fits.

I originally emailed General Tyre USA as the European site wouldn't accept the email. They hadn't realised I was from Europe which I think confused them as The Grabber AT in The States is a different tyre. They have now directed my email on to an appropriate source and I await a response.
