MaxxRaxx issue

Had new MaxxRaxx installed on detachable towbar on Friday Afternoon.

No rain this afternoon so thought would try it. Took ages and did it very carefully. 32 kgs of bike on it.

Went inside to get kids and clobber together, came out and it looked like this:

hmmm Shocked

what do you do now?? Embarassed

done the email Martin already, thanks

Just glad I didn't go anywhere. I don't think it is anything I have done as it appears to be the hitch bit that has moved.

Just seeing if anyone else has had this problem with a professional install (Got the certificate!!!)

Shocked As you say, lucky you didn't zoom off in it Spotter, I thought there had been issues with this manufacturer before. Not a good design really, just relying on friction from clamped plates. Hope you get recompensed, incl any damage to bikes / removable towbar.

DND3,

I had heard that maxxraxx were very good and that many on this site have used their product, with very positive feedback. I've just fitted a removable towbar on my D3 so that we can carry the family's bikes and I'm waiting for a chance to visit maxxraxx to have the mount fitted. I called them and they refused to sell except through an approved fitter, to avoid problems like this, so I've got to take the car or at least the hook to the UK. Surely there must be more to it than poor design? I'll watch this thread with interest and if maxxraxx fix the problem and explain what happened, I'll be pleased to buy from them.

Well I wouldn't want to trust it unless the plates were specifically shaped or thicker and then milled out to fit snugly around that particular towbar, so that there was no possibility of it moving anywhere once clamped. In this particular case an approved installer was used and look at the result ! Rolling Eyes

To be honest, before I went anywhere i would have fitted the auxiliary straps......but that then would have meant the entire weight was hanging off the upper tailgate!!!!!

.....which is the main reason I wanted a towbar mounted bar......

NJF I went with them as I had heard so much good as well...........and while I know they had issues in the past I was convinced that professonal installation would avoid such issues....there is a dedicated set of instructions for fitment to the D3 in the box Thumbs Up

The rack itself is a good bit of kit so I am a bit upset.

Shocked that shouldn't happen, had 5 bikes on mine and all been ok. IIRC there are pins on the bracket that should prevent this - perhaps the bracket was not assembled correctly - did Max do it himself?

There was a casting problem IIRC that they had to get around - Very responsible company as they let every puchaser know about the problem and corrected it ASAP. They also said that anyone who could not wait for the fix could have their money back.

Rolling Eyes The bike rack is really well designed, strong and very easy to use, the bracket does not just rely on friction. The problem here seems to be that the bracket on the towbar has been incorrectly fitted.

Hi Woody179,

I am inclined to agree with you, I think the issue is the installation rather than the design............however it is not a good confidence booster. My Father is due to have one installed by the same fitter on Tuesday, I am inlcined to tell him to hang fire on that.....

I have emailed MaxxRaxx and I expect a good response as they have been good to deal with so far Thumbs Up

Agree with that.

Seeing what happened to you I think I'd agree with that. Max came and fitted mine himself (at the time they had not trained up enough people to fit it to their standards) and its been fine since. I do not think Max will be very happy with the person that fitted it for you - but they will sort it out for you.

The rack itself looks fine, it is the attachment to the towbar I am referring to, and I have no doubt Max is a responsible person. I disagree that the fitting does not rely on friction though, and for that reason please remind me not to drive behind either of you when you have bikes attached. Whistle Wink

DND3, have you actually seen the bracket before it has been fitted? I have (also have a copy of the fitting instructions) and I assure you there is more than just friction involved - there are pins etc that will lock the bracket into posistion (if fitted correctly of course). These pins are adjustable but they are not supposed to be altered as they are preset at factory - maybe this fitter did alter them or just fitted them in the wrong place.

Just to add to this, I have already had a response from Max on a bank holiday weekend Thumbs Up

that is above and beyond the call of duty. 8)

I will reiterate, my dealings with MaxxRaxx themselves so far I have no complaints with. I did think to start with that I may have done something wrong myself but I think now it probably wasn't me.

Just looking on Maxx Raxx website at the Swan neck adapter - how is the rack part prevented from pivetting on the Black triangle part - pins?

see image here:
.

Has your pin moved/snapped/not in place?

Have had the maxxraxx 4bike unit for around a year (on D1 300 series) - excellent piece of kit, a company that definately seems to support and have great belief in their product (full spares support etc) - just need to see if unit will work ok on D3 with multi-height towbar or if I need to change upright to Premier version (no rear spare wheel)

regards

Gary

Hi Gary

on the basis of mine, not really sure what stops it rotating, there is a grub screw on the offside plate though, you can see it in my bottom photo.

I have to say on mine as well the tow ball is a lot nearer the bracket than in that shot you have posted.
