Is this to differentiate the 250bhp engine from the detuned 200'ish version of the 3.0litre I seem to recall Jaguar have some such way of naming their perfomance version

Given that TD stood for 'Turbo Diesel' one can only speculate that this means 'Sports Diesel' and follows Dexters theory.
Sports ? ...which sport ? a freakin Sack Race??21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Not guilty on the Sport theory, but could be ...........
S-mooth diesel
S-ought after diesel
S-hort of two cylinders diesel
S-mart money diesel
S-mokin diesel (when/if the EGRs fail)

nope...it wasn't worth the suspense... The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeksnearly 4 weeksover 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

guessing here but it would be "super" if they could "charge" even more power into the 3.0 litre ????Discovery 4 the greatest 4wd on the planet. LandRover the worst customer service imaginable. Do you have to put up with one to experience the other? Apparently yes!!!!

I like the way you call an 'S' spec version basic. My D3 'S' has more toys than a D4 'GS'.
