Good news:
I'm still here and haven't been wrestled to the floor by balaclava-wearing LR employees brandishing plastic handcuffs and Great Plains fleeces. My office door is still hanging on it's hinges and there is no fleet of blacked-out RRSs and men with guns forming an exlusion zone around the company.
Bad news:
This means that the letter change is probably nothing to do with the engine name. Back to the drawing board
P.D. With this being Land Rover, I'm kind of worried that they will use the same supplier to send out their summons notices as they do to send out the customer service questionnaires.....which means that I'll probably receive it this time next year and will therefore have completely forgotten what it is I'm being summoned for 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Not entirely true. Yes we were able to construct the new front end look due to a f*ck up on the LRX video from the Official LR Site but I am personally aware of other instances where people (including me) didn't get to see/hear everything
And anyway there has been a post on another thread elsewhere on this site that, to my mind, has pretty much revealed the 'thingy' - and I have NO IDEA how that person gleaned that info - because google reveals nothing
EDIT - thingy is publicly described on a well known LR Mod Supplier website Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Awful enough to want a 2010 instead of 2011?
Depends how important badges and labels are to the individual and how resistant one is to change (see above). Not a big issue to me (or anyone I would imagine!) at all and change can be good sometimes.
As the information is 'out there' (and I found it quite easily earlier today, not that it's worth wasting anytime over whatsoever, believe me ) does this mean a few LR franchises will be up for grabs ? Somehow I doubt it.
Knowledge is power, and I have neither, so time for lunch!

Well from a quick search on the web and chatting to some dealers it appears to be nothing to big, more like a step back to old model badging and a special edision model that will suit our winters if the last one was anything to go on, S is for snow as DSL would know.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

When I hear the word "awful" I think 2011 D4 with 24" spinner wheels, huge whale tail aero fin at the back, neon ground effect led lights, smoke machine button (not james bond style), and bonnet flame paint. That and a badge that says Discovery 4 SS.16 D4 Landmark

D4S
I think its a basic S spec D4
Possibly with a de-tuned version of the 3.0 engine
Not really interesting unless it dropped down a level on emissions based road tax, but I want an HSE spec anyway
Saw something on www about such a model on sale in Spain / Portugal
Also read that Lib / Dem wanted to scrap road tax altogether and introduce some form of road use tax Thoroughly enjoying my landrovers in the southwest.

I think that it was only in the UK that the S trim disappeared, to be replaced by XS and GS. In AFAIK all other countries, it stayed as S/SE/HSE.
The Snow edition has been around for quite some time in Spain. It is basically a 2.7 TDV6 S (unpainted arches etc) with some other upgrades over a standard S. They coupled it with such a good finance offer that they started running out of stock a month or so before the offer was supposed to end. (possibly due to a shortage of engines - I can't remember now)
I can't see the point of introducing this into the UK as you already have lower/upper spec S models and a S-branded trim is not going to make up for a lack of a SE model.
Cheers,

All this speculation is almost too much for me.............it really isn't anything to get too aerated about, and will doubtless leave people saying: Why?

I never realised the letter S would cause such controversy
