It may be a day or two before I get time to make up the loom - I am looking forward to it in a strange way, can't wait to get control of that damn FBH and show it who's the boss.

I've just ordered the ODB2 connector as well. Is there a simple way to connect a laptop to the FBH without extra plugs or making looms? Any advice greatly appreciated as I'm also determined to beat this Censored useless FBH as well! Should be up and running in time for the BBQ summer....

Hi Ian,

Do you have any plugs left for the FBH?

I want to make a loom for diagnostics.
Alternatively - if you have a complete cable available 8)

Eureka!!! I have just wired the FBH as per Ian's diagram and hooked it up to the laptop via the £10 ODB lead. Cleared the faults and fired it up using the control tab. Just need a couple of cold nights to check all is well.

Thanks Ian! Bow down

PS Do you have any plugs left over, I would like a proper loom similar to yours.

I tried to check before posting but could not find where the car details were shown in the profile. I have finally discovered that you need to "hover" over the car image but it is not obvious and you need to wait a while before anything appears.

I have no FBH plugs left now. - lots of the inserts still though.
It may be possible to use a .156inch molex header - I will look into this over the next few days and let you know.

Thanks Ian.

My FBH fired up first time this morning as it was cold overnight (+2). The laptop/ODB fix seems to have sorted it out!
Thumbs Up

I know this has been done to death and the solution seems to be to install the Webasto timer (my D3 is till under warranty so I don't want to invalidate that), but I have noticed that on most occasions where the FBH doesn't fire up, if I stop the engine and then restart after 10 to 20 seconds the FBH usually fires fine. That would seem to indicate that perhaps the unit isn't getting the command from the CAN Bus as surely if the heater was faulty it would never fire.
As an aside I had a real strange incident last Friday. I drove to work (18 miles or so) at around 2 to 3 degrees and the FBH never started. I set off home in the afternoon, tempertaure outside around 13 degrees, car temperate display 4 degrees for the first 2 miles (due to being parked in car park under office building) and FBH worked fine.

I read this thread with some interest myself and must before anything else add my personal commendation to Ian for his ground breaking work.

Some time ago, perhaps a year or so back, i was asked by Wiggs to do an FBH control module capable of replicating the timer mod but in a more cost effective, easier and neater package.

However although technically doing this is no problem, time constraints and higher priorities have meant that we have been unable thus far to spend any time on doing this.

However during my recent work on a D4 to D3 wheel conversion project http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic44385.html?highlight= which has now moved to adding a wireless link to accomodate paddle shifting, i believe i have figured a way to also and easily incorporate remote FBH control using a regular and low cost plip.

It would be really easy for me to add PC conectivity to our design such that anyone could also jack in with a PC and use this Webasto software as well.

The FBH can fail to start three times before it goes into 'lock-out'. Therefore switching off the ignition and then back on again will initiate a second 'start-up' command. If this is successfull then the failed start is erased, etc etc..
I have now reserected four FBH that Land Rover had deemed faulty and in need of replacement - these where fitted to disco3, RRS and freelander. I guess that those fitted to the RRV will be the same as well.
I have all the command codes for the W-bus, and I was thinking of creating a standalone unit. As with all great idears time has not allowed it ... yet!
