"active differentials"
Hi all,
I've decided that I'm not going to go for a new D4 but go for a second hand D3 and also a Lotus Super7
One thing I'm finding is that there seems to be not a single D3 with the optional "active" rear differential, which as I understand it is just a locking rear. Is there any particular reason to this and/or can they be retrofitted?
Cheers
Dan

well I actually mean a dax rush, I've got a Honda S2000 engine and box in my garage that I've been making custom throttle bodies for, tripped over it the other day and had the wonderful thought that it would be the perfect engine for a caterham-a-like.
as for active diffs, it appears from a bit of searching that the only way to tell is by actually looking at the rear diff itself... please tell me there is another way, as the dealers round here do not particularly like people getting under their cars whilst in the dealership.

The reason is that with all the other traction facilities on the D3 a rear locker isn't really required. You might overcome obstacles slightly more quickly and with greater control but TBH it's not needed for most general off-road scenarios. No doubt the rear locker die hards will be here soon ....but I think it's the last tenuous link back to their woolly underpant wearing ancestors

There's plenty of D3's with rear 'E diff' around, not always advertised as such though...
Rear 'E diff' is great for maintaining momentum, TC is there to try and regain traction... if you don't know the difference, you're not really trying

I was informed by a certain Mr Cobley Jnr over the weekend that all HSE's came with rear locking diff's as standard. I always thought they were an option but then what do I know. For details on the next Kielder Safari click visit the Kielder Safari website

That would explain it. He was adamant that all cars with the 4x4 display had it.
Little does he know that all cars with the built in screen could now have the 4x4 Display enabled For details on the next Kielder Safari click visit the Kielder Safari website

Assuming you mean Land Rover dealers, I'd go somewhere else. Untold horrors can lurk underneath!
Actually you can see the e-diff actuator from the side around the rear wheel - take a torch and ask them to raise it to offroad height. And if they can't / won't do that you should definitely go somewhere else!!
