OK, so here's a scenario.
Sainsburys have an offer on wine, buy 12 bottles and get 25% OFF, but i may not want 12 bottles,
so who wants to go in on a group buy? does martin then have to contact sainsburys to see if they want to be a sponsor?
Like i said, it's friday and i'm being mischevious, so PLEASE don't get in a bad mood.. one wife.......livid

Don't forget to make a site contribution, maybe the empty bottles I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

In the old days.....
Group buys were set up for the benefit of the group.
The person who set them up would benefit from the discount too but the amount of work they put into setting up far outweighed their saving
The supplier would also benefit...as long as they had their head screwed on.
There wasn't even a Group Buy section on the site until late 2006 and I don't think it had any rules at first.
I don't object to anyone making money.
Would it not be better for Martin to use the result of the group buy to leverage sponsorship than to try to get it before the group buy has got off the ground? Surely a potential sponsor would be much more interested if money had been spent with them... nil admirari

FFS I have just read through all this and a couple of things are noticable straight away.
First - Martin, the site owner and financial beneficiary of revenue generated by donations from members and sponsorship ads has not made any comment on the thread, unless it was done my by PM which IMHO is pointless as the fact that it is his site, his rules etc etc as has been pointed out to the entire forum !
Second - in order to generate more income for the site and at the same time be able to offer forum members some advantages - proactive management of the site with active PR / market research might be a good idea.
Its a fairly simple premise - make a list of the items / services that may be of interest to ALL forum members.
A single post with a list / poll which members can add to would be a good start, so for example Jet- Boils, jacks, etc you can exclude stuff established sponsors provide or not.
Once the list is made get on the web and find suppliers of the items who can a) offer the product or service at a reasonable cost/ discount to members as a Group Buy. These suppliers could then be invited to advertise at a reduced rate on the forum if they wish to.
This way members benefit, (without members there would be a lot of posts from mods to one another about FKW and they would have to take it in turns to boss each other around and delete posts) but also and equally importantly Martin would benefit from increased revenue.
Worth bearing in mind that there are a lot of forum members outside the UK - like minded people in US, Aus, RSA and many other exotic places where any purchase made from current UK site sponsors has to be calculated to include the cost of getting whatever it is to them in their home country.
Having the priveledge of travelling around, I know that there are many companies - large and small, overseas who provide stuff to their local LR fraternity (D3) users, but none appear as sponsors on this forum?
How many on the forum are using kit manufactured overseas, lights, winches etc?
Economies of scale - about sums it up.....
No this wasn't a rant it was a verbalisation of an FORECAST FOR TONIGHT: things have happened out there!!!

Am far as I'm concerned, none of this thread need have taken place really.
If the hoop that has to be jumped is dropping me a quick PM, then I'm terribly sorry to you all for the inconvenience
The rules are clear, and I have NEVER halted a group buy. On occasion, with certain products, I have suggested that site sponsors should be given a chance to help - often they can't but I don't think it's fair on them that a competitor should be able to sneak a load of sales to site members. Would the site sponsor who's criticised me like to comment on this point?
Most group buys involve products only available from non-sponsors, for example Jet Boils, and in those cases there is never, ever a problem with running the group buy. What is meant with the "contact me" rule is to keep me the in loop and (pretty rarely) to see if suppliers would like to supply anything else to site members. It's not to try and interfere, I appreciate that group buys take a considerable amount of commitment to organise and I never intend to take control or otherwise stick my nose in.
In addition, there has never been a requirement to add a site donation to any group buy. Donations are donations, completely voluntary at all times.
I do know that this site is nothing without its community, at no point do I ever intend to damage that at all. However I don't know why this is suddenly an issue for some people after 3 years of the Group Buy forum existing and two pages of Group Buy threads being posted?
Contrary to what some of you think, and I notice it is the same group of members who seem to be critical of everything at the moment, this site isn't actually ruled with an iron fist - you'll find many other sites on which you can't do anything except have discussions completely on topic and with many more restrictions than here.
If you do have problems with certain rules, or questions about why things are being done, you'll find me pretty receptive at all times to being contacted. I do try to be completely fair, and I think that the current vogue of certain people criticising me, and every rule or decision is extremely unhelpful and disruptive. You've been around here for a long time, most have met me and must know that I can actually be talked to? 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
Any issues with the site let me know!

And actually on reflection, that is probably a really good point Dom! if the other sponsors contributed to forum life as much as TLO does, then they would raise their profile on here and get more of a look in, surely site sponsorship has to be a 2-way thing I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats.
