Tunisia October 2009
We said that someone would probably start a photo thread, so here goes:
At Genova port ... stuuuupido! ... idiota! ... we love Italian customer service:
The first morning's drive on the day after arrival. Every car had a RAI fitted:
TFC finding that his car came fitted with wheels as factory fit:
... on both sides ...
Parked up on the first section of desert off-road:
Convoy drill ... just follow TFC:
... bu99er that, we're not following him down there!
Glynne's too sexy for his shirt
Formation parking ... bonnets raised to help dissipate engine heat:
MrH hooning around the first really serious sandy section:
Rescue01 (I think) following MrH:
TFC exits his car (just) after digging in up to the chassis:
Proof that a plasma rope (Glynne's in this case) does not simply "drop to the ground" when it breaks. This whipped from the winch vehicle about 15m away, to end up beneath TFC's car. Luckily all were standing well clear:
"I've sussed the problem, mate, yer rim is missing":
Air down to about 15 psi on Kumho KL71:
TFC pulling MrH out of a tight spot:
MrH testing out sand launch mode:
TFC backing out of a problem under tow by MrH:
... after which, he tried the problem again with a bit more speed:
... which didn't quite do the trick, so back into reverse gear:
MrH tries another route around TFC's problem and initially can't get traction on the rear offside wheel:
Some time and a fair distance later TFC needs a tow from MrH to come unstuck (TFC was the pathfinder, so got stuck more often than we who simply followed):
More bonnets up during a break:
... and more:
Glynne's still smiling:
Salt flat road:
NJF parked on salt flat ... only a few days after heavy rain reduced it to soft mud:
A quick break on the road across the salt flat:
Short pause to inspect the bridge near the start of Rommel's Pass:
Rescue01 crossing the bridge, keeping well to the left, away from the flood damage:
Adam (TFC Designate) standing where MrH eventually parked his D3. A couple of steps back or to the right and Adam would have fallen quite a long way:
MrH parked on the same spot. The photo doesn't show the contrast between near and far rocks very well, but this was a very exposed spot:
At the other end of Rommel's Pass, an introduction to Tunisian environmental policy:
Will hopefully get round to uploading some of mine later tonight or tomorrowLRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Another pic, this of my D3 parked on the salt (mud) flat:
and perhaps the most disappointing photo of the trip - a long exposure when it was very nearly dark. It's spoiled by camera shake. Don't let the image fool you - it was very nearly dark. The Nikon's sensor is very sensitive and makes dusk seem like day. I wish I had used a tripod.

I think it was Derek babbling on in my earhole that made me shake.
