I have a second set of 17" performance wheels fitted with STT's for offraoding. Bit of a hassel changing back and forth but the Wranglers aren't made for the bush and they would get a bit expenseive replacing after damage. THe STT's are really noisy on the bitumen (much more so than the MTR's on my Defender ute) but drive reasonably well and seem to be going well in the bush. I have had ST's before on a Defender,had a stake in the side wall of one but they chipped really badly so after 85,000 kms got the STC's the next time around. ST's/STC's have copped a bit of bad press lately, but I got excellent performance and no damage from the STC's.
If I had my time over again I would probably get a less aggressive tread pattern (probably Micky Thompson or ST's or BFG's for the 17" rims as the Disco performs well enough to get away with not having full mud terrain patterns for our country, and the noise of the STT's spoil the smoothness and quietness of the Disco.

Thanks for feedback abotu the STT's. I checked them out in person at a dealer and they looked a bit much. I may run with the ST's instead. i'd like to get into the all-terrain, but 265 70 R17 is the only option, and makes them oversize by about 40mm, which is too much.

I've had both ST's and STT's on my D3 (LT245/70/17).
Do not get ST's if they are not the anti-chip compound. In 17" there are no choices. The D3 will eat them up and the blocks will tear off in no time at all. Mine had about 8-10,000Km and were replaced by Cooper using a prorata calculation. I was happy to pay $220 and have 5 brand new tyres in STT's. No chipping to date and they have been on some pretty shalely and rocky terrain plus twisty coarse bitumen.
The noise of the STT's is only marginally higher than the ST's and is acceptable in my opinion for an off-road tyre. In the D3 which is well sound proofed it is still obvious but not annoying.

Have just had the Cooper 265/60r18 fitted  . My impression after a small trip is that they are less noisy than the Good Year and "appear" to hug the road more.  Still to try off road.

Bob - is that the Cooper Zeon you went with?
I'm now looking at sticking with the 18" rims too, but going up a size or 2, to the Mickey Thompson ATZ - LT275/65-18 = 32". I was looking at the Cooper STT - but it is porobably more aggressive than what we'll need for sometime. maybe one day a second set of 17" rims, and I'll do STTs on them - but a good AT type tyre is what we need for now.

I have had the Cooper 245/70/17 STT on Performance Lotus wheels for a wile and will not be puting them on untill I have to. Like a lot of others I am wating wearing out the orignales on the 18"S as on road tires, the problem is the Goodyear Wranglers are starting to chip and tear at the front.
The tire place said there had been a lot of this sort of failure with this type of tire especially as the milage gets up and tire gets old! They have only done 27500 Km and 18 months old. Also the tire place sugested I could not expect anything much beter from a very poor rubish tire 
Are there any updates on the Federal 18"S yet? as I am not realy keen on putting on a purely road tire and may have to replace them or use the S TTs untill the Federals are available.

Only problem with this tyre size - 255/55-18 - is that it's even smaller than the standard D3 size - why would they do that - std size is 30", this size is only 29" (std for D2...)

From what I have read on the Net, General Tire do have a 255/60R18 AT tyre and it was slated for production round about now. If Simex decides to import it, then we would most likely see it sometime mid 2007 (hopefully!!). '06 Disco 3 TDV6 SE Buckingham Blue

Another 18" AT due in April/May 2007. I received the following reply to my inquiry re Continental tyres.
Continental have not made the size yet, they have planned production for January 2007 of the 255/60R18 112V in Conticrosscontact AT, if this goes ahead we should have stock in Australia around April/May. Can you wait that long for new tyres? The tyre is well worth the wait as it performs very well.

April/May will be decision time for D3 owners with 18" wheels, with these and the AT2 due in Australia. 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.
