Height question (was Probably stupid....) |
|
I'm having a huge dilemma regarding parking in height restricted car parks (multi's to be accurate)
At what height limit do D3 owners turn away and look elsewhere?
I know the manual says 1.97m in low mode but do you still nip under a 2m limit bar?
I'm finding myself avoiding my usual parking locations so I don't cause a traffic jam (literally!) 57 RRS TDV8

I have a Front runner roof rack and can just fit under a 2m bar when lowered.
The only time Ive had a problem is when I went under a 2m bar and then clipped a fire sprinkler when reversing into a parking space. Duncan

Wow... so you can still fit under a 2m height limit with a roof rack... therefore I must have acres of freedom (no rails or bars)
I now think I've been slightly over cautious 57 RRS TDV8

Free Jetwash! Been back to that space often Duncan?
I always lock to access height in car parks and use 2m as my height limit (just in case some tool forgot to take a ramp into account). I think this should give me at least 4" of freedom.
The only time I've hit the comms aerial is when I saw a 6 foot limit (made from tree logs) and stupidly flipped down the headrest to check and gave it a mental thumbsup You'd be amazed how much pressure that aerial can exert on a glass roof without shattering it, yet force the back end down about 2 inches. I thank my lucky stars that I was only doing 0.01 MPH so the pressure built up relatively slowly rather than slamming it. Any faster and I'm under no illusions that it would have shattered, and I'm thankful for the ruts in the gravel that allowed me to squeeze so much more than 6' under it. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

The car parks under estimate the heights IMO. When you view measurements on your sun visor I go in if its around that figure. Problem is remembering to lower car and remove any mag mount ariels attached.
You are right to be cautious though. SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE

Very true; just 'cos it was 2m when they built it, doesn't mean that they haven't fitted extra lights, drains, sprinklers etc afterwards that come down lower than that. I keep meaning to add a couple of "cats whiskers" to the front roofrack mountings either side of the sunroof to act as a warning that I'm heading into trouble. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

But remember LOCKED access height, a burst of speed and you could start raising into obstacles otherwise Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Reminds me of when I took out about 5 ceiling lights in a multi storey in Poole.... I had two windsurfers on the roof, stacked,...the top fin was 2" higher than the lights.. oops 57 RRS TDV8

When I owed a bits of sushi I scared Mrs CnW to death by driving full speed in a car park which was 2,15m and the Bits of sushi was 2,10m it was pretty scary driving towards a concrete beam at speed.
I checked the day before and the look on her face as we went through the entrance
She was not to pleased.
Still only another 6 years in the dog house

My disco must be a bit lower than everyone else's?
I use 1.9 as a working minimum on access height and have never had a problem. The lowest I regularly use is a multi on Audley Sq. in London posted as 1.93m - it scares passengers going in and I wouldn't do it too fast because of the bounce!

theoretically I am sure we should be OK as I am sure there are regs about headroom for people to walk (I am not a civil engineer) but there are certainly rules for other things....usually works out at about 2.2m clear height or so to pipework, spray nozzles etc. so that Mr. 95%tile wearing his hard hat and skipping along merrily doesn't bang his head!!
Still don't trust these civil engineers and construction guys though end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Does anyone know the height of the car in 'standard' mode - i.e. pootling around town at 30mph, enter car park - am I, or more probably SWMBO likely to smack the car in multi-storey car parks?
The LR site & brochures list the 'minimum' height, but don't give heights at various air settings.
thanks!

Top of tyre to Arch in Access (low) mode 4cm
Top of tyre to Arch in Standard Mode 9cm
Top of tyre to Arch in Raised mode 13cm
If we're assuming the 1.97m in access mode is an accurate height then that gives standard mode a height of 2.02m (6' 7" and a bit)
