My wife (while holding child) missed getting knocked out by very little yesterday, the right strut popped out and the whole tailgate collapsed. I called LR customer Services as I don't have a warranty to see if they would fix it as a goodwill measure (they're very lucky not to have a court case on their hands) and was told to book in with a dealer so they could look at it and report back to LR.
My wife went to the dealer to be told it would cost £59 to "do a diagnostic" which is a very grand way to describe looking at a hole. After a very angry call to LR this charge has been waived and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I advise anyone who hasn't to check their struts as this isn't an inconvenient fault like the EPB or compressor failure or trim falling off, or fuel cap playing up (had all of these in two years of ownership), it's seriously dangerous.

Update - LR will not fund any cost of repair as "due to the age of the vehicle" and "it's not a recognised fault", so be warned - LR now feel that a six-year old Disco is not worth their time.

I noticed while cleaning the car the other day that my right hand side top nut was very nearly completely out. Managed to reattach it, all the other ones seemed okay.

Found this thread just yesterday... guess what, right side is loose (D3 SE 2005).
The bolt is tilted to the interior of the car, but it doesn't seem to be moving on openening or closing the hatch.
Perhaps because it is tilted, the strut can't come off, it looks like the nut inside is bend...
Gonna look in more detail as soon as I have the time.
Meanwhile will use the hatch as little as possible...The beginning of wisdom is silence. The second step is listening.
It is the nut inside coming off - that is the problem.
The strut falling off is just the indication of the problem. When that happens, you do have a problem.
There is no easy way to get a nut back up and inside the corner post and then positioned such that the threaded bit that supports the top of the strut can be tightened up.
Do not open your upper hatch again until you have a very thin 13 mm open end wrench and make certain you turn the correct direction as you will only get one chance. Fail and you will be reading all the posts in order to figure out how to make the nut magically appear back on the threaded bit - and it does take near magic.2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L AJ-V8 petrol; Traxide Dual Battery; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads; OEM solid vented discs; LR4 design hitch receiver; Wiggs D4 MOST bluetooth module; Clock on the Dash; 3 Flash signal light mod; Backup Camera; 2015/16 Nav Data update.

Thanks for the heads up!

Checked mine this afternoon. The left is tight, the right was hanging out. Tried to tighten, but appears to have sheared off
I will be attempting the 'nikademus-latch-fast-ezy-swing' procedure shortly

For chrisD3
My right one fell off, luckily I had read this board first and pointed it out to the dealer who was rather taken aback that I knew about it. Any way he fixed it and tightened up the left one.You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

A small tip - before you go to the hassle of attaching a nut to some wire, removing the trim etc, I would suggest that you check for the presence of the captive nut.
If you were to do all of the above and found the captive nut was still in place, it might be a bit annoying.
Not that this happened to me of course.. just saying

Another thank you. Checked my right nut and it was about to fall off. Tightened it up probably just before it failed. Thanks again. Brilliant site this
