Hi.
I am getting totally confused with this whole tyre thing - easily done as knew to all this lot.
I have to say the wear rates quoted here are pretty good. I just wore out a set of rears on my Merc at 18k.
Anyway, to the point.
The D3 is SWMBO. She does some minor off-road - when she goes across fields to train the mutts on shoots twice a week at the most.
I currently have Scorpian Zeros which look like they will need changing soon.
I was in Kwik-Fit at the weekend changing the Merc's and the guy told me the Zeros were best for the amount of off-road she does.
I was quoted something like £615 for a full set of Scorpians (he told me these were ATR's) and £650 for a set of Scorpian Zeros'
What is best mix for 80% road and 20% field?
I also noticed in the Saturday Telegraph that Honest John was recommending one of the mobile guys who seems to offer very good prices on some tyres.

Are you sure that's not "Florida Ice"? I've been driving through some serious puddles today at far greater than 60 and they felt surprisingly better than the zero's I had previously?
Well, it was raining pretty hard that day and i did not realize I was driving into a flooded area on the expressway.. However, it'd be nice to relax from the heat with some winter type weather...

I had Pirelli Scorpion snow and ice fitted on my D3 last winter. Excellent performance and lost only 1mm of tread in 4300 miles. I now have D4 which has 19 inch wheels so the above are redundant and on ebay. However unlike the D3 LR now recommend specific winter tyres depending on wheel size, in the case of 19 inch wheels it is the Goodyear ultra grip but it is impossible to establish why they made this choice. The English seem completely unaware of the advantages of winter tyres although they are considerable. However how do you establish which to fit? Any real experience out there?

Had these fitted for $1000 (US) out the door with replacement insurance. Got 10K on them and they look pretty good so far. Had a precision alignment at the Pasadena LR Dealer right after installation. Get free rotations every 5K, so I'm trying pretty hard here to maintain them.
No complaints on handling and quietness, very good. Ride is good too. Off-road I've done washboard and dirt, but worked well enough. Now the snow's here I'll try them out on the Angeles Crest, once it re-opens.

After 25,000 miles and one summer/winter my results are:
Wear: Profile depth at 7mm
Noise: Hasn't changed in 25,000 miles
Snow: Great tyre
Rain: No problems at all doing 90 mph on the German Autobahns.
Would I buy again? Oh YES

Totally in agreement. Why aren't people shouting from the rooftops about this tyre !! I would add they are fairly agressive on soft yielding wet ground, and yet eerily quiet on any road surface

Totally agree. Fantastic tyre, grippy, tough, long lasting and extremely quiet on the motorway... but why feel the need to tell everyone? I don't care what tyres other people use (unless they're braking behind me)!!!

Of course there are many variables when it comes to tyre wear. But checking over my 18" Pirelli ATR's for any damage after some off roading, I reckon that they wearing even better than my previous set of 19"s. They could be good for over 50k miles at this rate.
Has anyone actually gone over 50k miles yet?

Fitted Pirelli ATR 19 INCH APPROX 400 MILES AGO. The strong tyre walls give the vehicle a very sure footed feel compared to my old zeros. Feels like the bushes have been replaced (although this is compared to worn zeros). Mpg down 2 mpg, haven't checked pressures but will take the advice on this forum and add 2 psi all round. Fast damp cornering slightly less assured, but I expected this. Noise level about the same. Main reason for buying is the estimated 40 to 50 thousand mile predicted range.
Apparently these tyres are guaranteed for 50 thousand in certain countries. Hope this helps. Paid £180 fitted Discovery 3 HSE 55 plate Buckingham Blue with Alpacha

Right time to dig out the calculator. New ones (two in the car so easy to check) 10mm. Mine after 15k miles at 8mm across the board. Assuming linear wear from here in and changing at 3mm then 7.5k/mm of tread depth, 52.5k total life. 37.5k left on these and a full replacement set maturing nicely in the dark in my garage. Pretty happy with that. 
PS 18"ers.

Make sure you all get the best out of the 255/55x19 ones you have.
If you fitted the other top brand available and poped the ATR's in the boot you will no doubt get closer to the magic 100K. 
I8" will stay for a while though.
