Towing a modified sankey through Europe

Driving down to the Italian Lakes this summer and I need to know the following info

1, What is the maximum speed you can tow a trailer in Europe
2, What is the maximum weight the trailer can be and still be legal? The figures for gross train weight as well.
3, Do I need to get any special insurance?

The sankey has full rear and side lights including fogs and has disc brakes. I'm sure it will not weigh as much as the large tin tents but I wouldn't like any nasty suprises by the local bobbies. Anything else I need to know or tips would be greatly received i.e campsite electric hook up etc

1 max speed. different in different countries.
2 max weight. The trailer should have a label what the max weight is allowed to be. Further it is dependeing on your driving license.
For me I have the old style Dutch driving license and I am allowed to tow 3500kg behind the D3. Because I have the trailer license for free too. If you don't have the trailler license your max weight is the weight off the pulling car and the total is not to be above 3500 kg. I believe.
But this could be different because you are from a different country so you could have a different driving license setup.
3. Check with your insurance company. I think Dutch rules are below 750 kg it is part of your car insurance above 750 kg you need an insurance. But that could be different in the UK to.

And on all borders I have crossed, there were traffic signs with pictograms telling you what that speed is.

Can't help you on the other points, as I'm sure that every country has its own legislation for this. As people travel from here to the farthest places in Europe with their tintents, I cannot image that you can get in trouble using a D3 for towing with weight and size less than a caravan and brakes and lighting in order.

On the way back Ent, if you dump everything before arriving at a cheap supermarket en France, you will be able to bring home 1501.7 pints of Stella.

Stella = 1.06 specific Gravity x 8.3 = 8.79pounds per gallon.

1650lbs pay load in a sankey

1650 / 8.79 = 187.71 gallons x 8 = 1501.7 pints. Just in time for the next Stormin the castle. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

You should take a good fridge with you - it will be hot. I suggest an Engel - 80 litre maybe. You can get ones that have a freezer compartment too. Quite rare so if you hear of one going you should snap it up.

Actually Lee.... there is something that you should know.

TUV is a German standard to which all tow bars must comply when fitted to vehicle manufactured after a certain date.

If you meet local bobby who know this and also know that you can't get a NATO hitch for a D3 then they could be awkward about it.

Any tow bar should be stamped or stickered with TUV and relevant standard.

German by origin the relevant BS and other European standards ISOs or what ever they are have all been harmonised to this TUV standard. I spoke to the DoT about ways around it and the only way is to submit the whole vehicle together with fitted tow bar for the same inspection that a kit car has to go through in order to be allowed on the road. Is high cost and a big pain in the Censored aparently.

So don't think you can do anything about it, but at least you know what is coming. If you buy that fridge off me I won't tip the Gendarmerie or Polize off. What is you exact route again?

I wouldn't worry about the Polizei, they won't get involved with it unless there is an incident. They will be familiar with the NATO hitch because of the large presence of HM forces in Germany. Thumbs Up

the speeds shown are in kmh with mph in ()

3. Your UK insurance should give you european cover but beware it's only minimum cover (like 3rd party) If you want more cover you'll need to ask your insurer for green card and specify the dates of travel.

electric hook ups on campsites either use the 16A round connectors or the european 2-pin types. Go to a caravan acessory shop you can pick up leads there with a 13A UK socket on the other end for a few £££

Don't forget your hi-vis vest & warning triangle!

if you have anything mounted on the back of the trailer or d3, ie bikes then you MUST have a red triangle on the back in italy. they are hot on the boarder for this one,,,

don't break the speed limit at all in austria, there is a very low crime rate so the police have nothing to do except stopping jonny foreigner,,, also if you drive through austria make sure you buy the motorway tax sticker, it's 5 euro's. 120 fine if you dont have it

You only have to have that sticker if you drive on the motorway. If you take the smaller and nicer roads it's not needed. It is about 7 euro for 10 days.

sorry roel yes you're correct, that was what i meant, just for the autobahn, but look out for the police anywhere, they particularly like to stop foreign plates and fine them for some un known reason
