I am thinking seriously about buying this black 05 TDV S with a few extras. Mileage is high at 124000 but has FSH and has obviously been well cared for. Its in a dealers that i know very well. I have spoken to the prev owner who verified the service book and was a pretty fussy character. I have had two RR's and two Disco 2's and this is my first venture into a D3. Is engine and gearbox liable to break before long ?? I have been looking on forum and there are some with well over 200k. all advice welcome before i take the plunge. [/b]

Hi colboy
Welcome
Yes there are several reasonable mileage cars out there. If it is a known quantity it should be Ok as you know what has already gone and hence what might still go.
Is it a manual or Auto? end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

If it's Auto as your ID suggests, then it may be worthwhile seeing if you can get the gearbox oil flushed as the ones who have done this on 100k+ miles have said it drives like a new car afterwards. (Assuming it's due to deterioration of the oils and fillings in the oil.)

hi, how much??? i was offered 7.5k for mine at trade in, but decided to keep it... it will have done around 180k by the time i've finished with it.....
it still drives like new... seats a bit baggy, front ARB could do with replacing... and it lets water into front footwell when it feels like it... apart from that I LOVE IT....
quite a few >120k cars on here...... some have more mileage but have had assitance from "Highways Agency" to get there
if it is around 10k i'd go for it......make sure belt service was done at 105k, dear one that.... next BIG SERVICE is 150k............thats gonna hurt its a full fluid change!!!! i'm lovin it....

OOps takes a wee while to get used to the emoticons !! yeah its an Auto- drove it today and discovered that it doesnt pull consistently on a hill !! the revs go up and down if throttle held still when theres a load on drivetrain. Theres a slight judder in transmission when you put the boot in on a hill nothing dramatic but its still there. Salesman to get it sorted out. Also it doesnt handle as well on turn in as it should ie theres a wallowy effect at the rear( am not expecting M5 cornering ability here) Could it be engine management for the revs and wear in box for the judder ??

To be honest, I'd go with the auto-box for both faults....it may well need a flush. This often causes symptons like juddering and fluctuating revs...
Generally speaking, 124K miles is all. Despite the apparent fragility of some of the bits stuck onto the powertrain (EGR vales, Turbos and gear selectors), the engine and auto-box seem to be very reliable.
Go for it!! But just make sure the salesman sorts it out before you part with your cash or they'll then just tell you that it's "normal" and a "characteristic of Land Rovers"
I still can't believe that you can buy D3s for this sort of the money in the UK....the cheapest 2004 S one I've ever seen was 23K over here quite recently.....(yes....23,000 pounds, not 23,000 euros) 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Used values took a hammering late last year and early this. I bought my new XS in January (2008.5 MY) for £29,000. A 4 year PCP based on 80,000 miles gave a final payment of around £8,500. The finance companies have been burned by the drop and are now taking a very cautious view of future values. The plus point is if values do hold up then I will have more cash to put in to the next one.

thanks for the advice guys. i have one more issue with the handling in that it tends to waiver/wallow a bit at the rear on the turn in to a corner and the cornering isnt as crisp as it should be. Any ideas what would cause that ??
