I have just had this problem appear on my Landie. I changed the rear discs and pads about 3 weeks ago and just 3 days ago the EPB gave out a noise like a circluar saw chopping up a coffin ... OMG I thought I'd run over somebody ... The dash warning light came on so I shut down, restarted and released the brake. Drove for about 15k's and then stopped and tried (more out of habbit) to aply the EPB. Again it happened. I booked the car into Lance Dixon here in Melbourne and they have it right now. I must say though - they did convince me to purchase 2 years of exrta warranty for $2500.00 so I feel I should be covered for almost anything.
I can't understand in such an expensive can I've had to replace 2 axles, 2 diffs, 1 seat unit, I complete radio/cd setup, and all the pwr chair buttons, door grommets even the spare wheel cable winch. I love the car, I hate the reliability. When you consider some driveways here on our farms are 9 miles long, there's a chance you won't make it out!
Lastly, Budget, the major outback 4x4 rental company do not use naything but Landcruisers .... I'm begining to see why.
Cheers from here!
Update ... the dealer just said it's not covered by warranty as the inner shoe is a "wearing" item. Needs to be stripped out and replaced then to see if the actuator will still work? Intermittent engine Warning lamps waiting for update doesn't know what's going on there. But he did notice the horn was inooperable and the front LHS tie rod needs to be replaced it just keeps mounting up. $600 so far is the quote.
Update v2 .... dealer called and told me it wasn't covered by warranty because I'd fitted non genuine pads and discs myself? Also, not sure if the extended warranty purchased will cover he loose tierod and connectors or non operational horn. The bill is now up to $1300 to replace inner EPB shoes, Cable (said it was melted) and something random. What a cr@p handbrake system. New Toyota is looking better and better ...
Update v3 .... Park brke failure warning light now showing. No park brake function at all .... what a joke AUD $ 115,000 worth of HSE ... should have bought the Toyota. 1 beer is too many, 100 is not enough.

The pads and discs have nothing to do with the handbrake. Why did the dealer tell the insurance company as it had nothing to do with the failure. Use of non genuine is permittted as to force use of originals is anticompetataive; goes for warranty carried out by non dealer.
Worn pad being a wearing part is understandable though. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I have a ongoing problem with my D3 which is after driving in warm weather after about 45 mins the red handbrake light flashes continually and the amber like next to it is permanently on, then when you stop the handbrake will not work (you have to turn off the engine and turn on again to get the handbrake to work) - the engine also races when at a stop. Anyone else had this? And has anyone's garage managed to fix it? As mine is going back in again on Tuesday for them to try and find fault. charliewebfoot

Well, had the D3 for three months now and Lovin' It.
Last month the EGR's went (now blanked off) and yesterday the handbrake did it's best impression of a cat being pulled through a mincer, also various combinations of red/yellow warning lights on the dash.
Day off tomorrow, so plan a strip down and clean. If that doesn't cure it, then we'll be shopping for a new actuator. Fraser

EPB now stripped, cleaned and adjusted, thanks to Bodsys Brake Bible! Only, the Amber warning light wouldn't go off and the gear change indicator was sluggish, as well as no reversing lights....
....so re-calibrated the XYZ sensor, as described elsewhere on the forum and now all is well
Couldn't have done it without the forum Fraser

Please Help...Ok I have 3 disco 3 TDV6 under my charge and im currently working on to of them…One of my Discos EPB has packed up so I took the EPB cables and all of another Disco 3 which is off the road for a while (the EPB works perfectly fine).. After a full day of faffing about. The working EPB is fitted. Does it work? Does it f*&%. And the flashing red (P) and steady amber (P)..is waiting for me on the dash. I,m gutted. The question I’ve ask and please except my naivety. Do I now have to get one of those smart code/fault readers from those smart guys at black box? IE do i have to clear a “fault†…Or is it more basic than that IE something in the looms knackered
Cheers
Pulling my teeth out my boss said go and fix those three D3's that have been standing in the yard for 12 months......Oh i love a challenge lol.

Hello all, having had a handbrake problem for 2 months on my 58 plate (40,000 miles) Dis3. I read with interest, that i am not alone, and this is a common fault. I would like to share my experience with the Chester L/R dealer. In Jan of this year the height sensors failed, this had been going on for quite some time. they finally changed the sensors after i drove it to them on the stops. They argued and feused to relaese my car back until i paid them for the new tyres, I.M.O. were knackered due to the left hand sensors being faulty and the car pulling to the left.
2 months ago, i had a screamer, and the handbrake was locked. I tel Chester and Darren told me to get the hubs cleaned out of dust and dirt. This i did at a local (non L/R ) garage. It has been ok for 2 months, but now the wife was stranded with the handbrake locked on. We had to use the manual release. Drove it to L/R Chester, who informed that the module needed changing, due to wrong adjustment and would not be covered by warrenty(which is up at the end of Sept) because a local garage had touched it. I said it was one of their employees had told me to do this and that if i had known it would affect the warrenty, then i would of took it a L/R Dealer. I have spoken to L/R customer services, who are looking into it.
Where do i stand? any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank you Mad Monk.

Another EPB failure on a 2007 Disco3 complete with all the screeching etc etc etc
Strangely enough, mine failed (stuck on) in January and the AA man who eventually disabled it said you didn't need it anyway (?)....roll on nine months and we haven't used it, it goes through (and passes) the MOT only to stick on outside the MOT garage AFTER they have issued the certificate. They cannot fix it so AA called again to release and off to main dealer (Lookers on A40 in London)
The result is that they have said that I need a new EPB module which will cost me £600 plus fitting (another £400) but out of the kindness of their hearts they are willing to not charge me the £160 for the "work" that they have done so far to find the fault!!!!
To say I am annoyed is an understatement, but does anyone know of a cheaper option to fix this issue (or a cheaper garage) as £1000 is just not on

Experienced my first EPB screamer followed by locked on brakes today. Seems I have joined a not very exclusive club.... Operated the manual release, drove to the stealer ( only 3 weeks left on extended warranty!). Stealer can not book it in until after the new year and advised me I should not really drive it until fixed as this might cause more damage. Is that right? Seems like previous posters have had to drive for months while parts are on back order. It is an auto, so at least I can stick it in "park". (57) 2008 HSE

It's fine to drive, just don't use the EPB, stick it in 'P' when left. On the manual the EPB auto engages when you withdraw the key, not sure if it's the same on the Auto but if so hold down the EPB switch as you withdraw the key and it won't do so.
Also, keep an eye on the rear wheels, check after each journey to make sure they are not getting unusually hot, it's possible for the brake shoes to bind and overheat, although this is not always associated with EPB screech.
