Turbo vanes can stick. Especially if driven careefully. So if left for a while the vanes may have stuck when engine was cool.
There is a software update to 'exercise' the vanes. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I am amazed at CJS's patience, waiting for the dealer/LR to work out "a plan of action". If these things are available at the factory for production, someone,(the dealer) should have been shouting loudly at LR LAST WEEK,and perhaps if CJS got out of his pram in the dealers it might also focus their attention on the importance of customer care. If the vehicle was a BMW the agent would have the part by the next morning!,Land Rover dealers (exept TLO) are too complacent.

It is the external VNT mechanism that seizes. Other then taking it and thrashing it every so often. If you drive it carefully, you have more chance of the turbo failing, as the VNT mechasim isnt being used as much My D3 Build Thread

My Turbo went on New Years Eve, took many weeks to source one and the claim WAS escilated directly via Landrover Customer Care, I was given daily phone calls and texts and although frustrated at the lack of progress, very happy with the attitude towards me and the brken D3.
Luckily for me, LR decided to give the factory an extended Holiday on the production line and they were still receiving critical parts, so my turbo was robbed from the production line, and being BRAND NEW.
In my beleiving, now, ALL warrenty replacement turbo's are RECONDITIONED, its only the variable vane element that more than likely gone and broke, but thats what you are gonna get. Unfortunately the workshop wont start the strip on your D3 till the turbo is there, then the extra problems start.
On Mine the bolts had seized on to such an extent the Body had to be removed. Now dont panick, as this was the original way of doing this job, in the manual so to speak, but still worrying.
Once back, make sure at least once on every journey you give the engine a LABOUR. If its an Auto put it into switchable and boot it, back off, then boot it again. That keeps the vanes clean and able to open n close.

I think the new softare update was supposed to prevent this. I also believe there is a new part No for the latest turbos? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

The dealer told me it was the module on the outside of the
turbo that fails and the entire turbo is
replaced with a new part number and that
this is the third upgrade and the problem shouldnt happen again Pete

I contacted TLO (a member) and he very kindly looked into the turbo situation for me. Land Rover were suggesting part number LR008838 as the replacement part and this was showing up as on back order. However TLO said part number LR010188 would also work and was cheaper and more importantly - available. When I mentioned this to my dealer he said he had already worked this out and my car would be ready either tomorrow or the following day. Anyway I will pleased to get my car back and I am very grateful to TLO for his help.

Got the car back today. All seems to be well with the new turbo (touching wood as I type!).

CaverD3 has mentioned there is a software update to "excercise" the turbo vanes, does anyone know anything further on this ?

Yes, there is an Engine Management software update available. Basically, every time the engine is started (or switched off, i forget) the VNT actuator is moved through its full movement to prevent future seizures...
But the dealer will only carry it out under warranty if there is a genuine fault with the turbo. Otherwise you will have to pay for it
Unless you know someone who works in a dealership, obviously My D3 Build Thread
