Over the last week I've noticed a strange noise developing. It seems to be coming from the front drive train. It follows road speed (can take it out of gear and coast and it's still there) and is at its most noticeable around 75 mph.
It's difficult to describe but sounds a little like a Chinnook helicopter in the distance. The noise can be "felt" through the steering wheel.
I normally run AT2's which have maybe covered 3000 miles from new.
Went up to MJ Fews today and the workshop manager came for a trip up the motorway with me to listen. He definitely could hear it and is happy to investigate but first would like me to swap to normal road tyres to see if the noise changes or goes away.
I have a set of 18's with Pirelli's so will swap to them and test, but wondered if anyone had any ideas?

BTW tried out my MT/R's for the first time this week, and b***y Nora they're noisy . Sounds like a Banshee stuck in the boot. Do they calm down a bit once they're bedded in? Just as well I didn't try to diagnoise the above problem with them on! Andy

Try the tyres first, after that, check the undertray for the gearbox for muck causing the catalytic converter to resonate on the undertray, whilst you're there, check the front differential for leaks at the input shaft & both output shafts
Thanks, I'll let you know what happens when I swap the tyres, but unfortunately that won't be for a couple of weeks as I'm off skiing in Canda over Easter

Just thought - are your TP's OK? had that once with AT2's on, turned out to be one of the front wheels had low TP due to a slow puncture, there was also an issue with some AT2's causing a resonance some time after being fitted - can't remember where I read it though
Have my MT/R's on this morning, and although bloomin' noisy can still hear the mystery noise on the motorway. Will still test with Pirelli's in due course though.

The description sounds very like mine when the front wheel bearings were wearing out. It was doing it for a couple of thousand miles, then suddenly got worse.
Mind you, information they have posted on their web site contradicts what their technical department told Ronk Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills
D3 is going into the dealers tomorrow to investigate. Noise has got worse and is present no-matter which set of wheels/tyres I use. Can even hear it over the MT/R's!

I think I have something similar - its a humbing noise almost like tyre noise, no vibration through wheels though. starts about 50 its speed related not engine speed related.
Whats the easiest way of diagnosing - I was expecting front diff or transfer box - bigest concern I have is it is out of waranty and I don't want to start paying dealers to swap parts that are not faulty.
Like we think its the diff and it has some play - or we changed it the play has gone, noise still there we notice a bit of uptake on the transferbox etc etc until they change a £50 part to fix it and you end up with a £2k bill.
