Tried 3 laptops today, viewing angles are not great, although if there was a 'NAV' it'd be OK, also some concerns about thermal banding, particularly in summer, either solar gain on the top of the screen or problems with contrast on the bottom of the screen due to aircon-chill. I'd still need a DC-DC converter as well. What I want to do is have a dedicated GPS / mapping unit. If I was to use one of the laptops, it would always be a compromise with the other stuff installed on them.
What i'd really like is someone to say "no no no, you don't want one of them... you need one of these...." (not you Mossy Wink ) and give me an idea or a tried-and-tested solution, or at least an improvement on the one i've suggested. Although it'll be used intermittently, i'm after a serious solution, not a halfway house Wink

Vince had a neat system in his 110 on our Wales trip. I did not get a close look, but it seemed to be a dash mounted 10" lcd touch screen, and he was running memory map or similar.
yep, it is Gareth, think he has a marine(?) version of a carputer. not sure what software though

Now, I know this is a Mac and an Audi, but shows a neat interaction. I like the fact that the BT phone can act as a remote control Very Happy

My thoughts exactly. Just a case of deconstructing the M.O.S.T. science.

Interesting, but usual PR stuff - it doesn't actually say anything about the integration between car and PC. It could be read to indicate nothing more than power and aerial provision. Obviously we all hope it'll be somewhat more exciting.

I wouldn't hold my breath in expectation - your spot on about the 'PR' these things are like concept cars - what you get eventually (well in what we would consider the short term) aint much like what you see.

Copy post to this thread.

Came over from rrsport.co.uk.

Nice to see some people are interested in Carputers. Posted on rrsport.co.uk and no one seemed that interested.

You should look at www.mp3car.com. Mainly US based posters but some UK/Europe installers. Though they prefer the DIY approach!

10forCash did you install your Cartft pc?

I am looking forward to getting my hands on my RRS this month so I can see how viable a PC install would be.

Out of interest did you feel it was possible to find a screen to fit into the space of the SATNAV screen (gone for SE spec without SATNAV since I would rather spend the cost of that option on a better functional PC).

Robbi,
nothing purchased as yet... had to use Decembers 'disposable income' on trivia such as Christmas Rolling Eyes
Now we're into January though... Wink
I've got the HSE sat-nav screen in mine, so the location will have to be elsewhere, also, for my needs, that size is a bit small. I'm looking at using one of the 'no-holes' carphone brackets to mount a 10" touchscreen. Apart from the multimap or Fugawi mapping software (still not made my mind up Rolling Eyes ) I'll be using a parallel port switching device ( http://www.kemo-electronic.com/en/module/m104/index.htm ) with soft keys as well as possibly integrating one or more video inputs with a external firewire HDD to store the video, or possibly a NAS
One of the key points is that the unit must be transferable, so i'll make up a couple of looms, one will be installed and the other will be a generic vehicle fit with accessory connections and a portable GPS receiver.
Once I get the kit together, i'll update this thread with details and photo's.

Thanks for the link BTW Thumbs Up

What size of screen could the existing sat-nav screen slot take? I am hoping a 7/8" screen but until I get my hands on my vehicle I won't know.

If you happen to have a tape measure handing Smile would be grateful.
Thumbs Up
