Scotland 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 Base 7 Seat Manual Buckingham BlueDiscovery 3

Looks a top choice.

I would go for a slimline dvd/rw player though- £54 from here http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/drivescddvd.html

Marvellous retailer. I'm not on commission either!

Just a quick question on the quote you have - it is charging VAT at 16%. Is it UK based?

I asked here about carputers a good while ago and got a fair bit of information.

It's a German retailer, thinking about it, i'll probably go for the DVD option for later 'expansion'. I'm trying to keep the cost down so that 'senior management' doesn't go into a snit about it Rolling Eyes

Does this run through the sat nav screen or do you have to have another screen?

It's a seperate 10" touchscreen, I did consider routing composite video through the LR nav. screen but decided the 10" screen would be more useful with its higher resolution, it also means that the system can be moved between vehicles easily

if you not use it daily, and only when on "adventure" Wink, then why not using a plain portable pc, with gps mouse?

It fits nicely on the open top glove compartment.

not a bad idea at all Wink I've got a couple I could 'trial fit', although I think the screen viewing angles might be poor - i'll give it a go though! Thumbs Up

Tried 3 laptops today, viewing angles are not great, although if there was a 'NAV' it'd be OK, also some concerns about thermal banding, particularly in summer, either solar gain on the top of the screen or problems with contrast on the bottom of the screen due to aircon-chill. I'd still need a DC-DC converter as well. What I want to do is have a dedicated GPS / mapping unit. If I was to use one of the laptops, it would always be a compromise with the other stuff installed on them.
What i'd really like is someone to say "no no no, you don't want one of them... you need one of these...." (not you Mossy Wink ) and give me an idea or a tried-and-tested solution, or at least an improvement on the one i've suggested. Although it'll be used intermittently, i'm after a serious solution, not a halfway house Wink

Out of interest there is an article on this very subject in the Feb 2006 edition of 'Computer Shopper' (page 264). Seems fairly in depth 8)

Also contains reference to www.cartft.com

Don't know why the Feb edition is out in Dec though Shocked

Vince had a neat system in his 110 on our Wales trip. I did not get a close look, but it seemed to be a dash mounted 10" lcd touch screen, and he was running memory map or similar.
