LED Trailer lights issue. UPDATE 18 Oct

Just had my trailer tarted up & have added some nice bright LED's, however..

Plug lights into car (56 plate D3 with factory fitted trailer & caravan sockets) indicators on trailer pulse either with or without key in ignition/engine running, no trailer symbol showing on dash, all other lights work ok.

Just added 2 resistors between earth & indicators as advised by local LR specialist, things still the same but the lights are brighter.

Any ideas suggestions appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Paul.

Hi Jester,
I may have misunderstood you, but the resistors should be placed in parallel with the indicator lights. (A recent post on here says that only one light needs to have the resistor fitted, but I can't confirm that.)

Me and a friend have also just upgraded his trailer with LED lights and had the same pulsing on the blinkers. It was only a problem on the D3, not a "normal" car. We also tried with resistors but the voltage is too low for the resistors to work properly (at least the ones we got hold of). We ended up using one 4 pin relay for each blinker on the trailer because the pulse on the blinkers from the car is too low to close the relay. Same relay you would use for extra lighting on the car. If you also want the trailer to blink inside the car you have to have a resistor on each blinker as well, connected to or after the relay. We put the resistor after the relay so it doesn't have power all the time and getting hot.

I am still testing to see if resistors on the main lights on the trailer also to get the D3 to turn off pdc while reversing.

Trailer tried with FFRR - fault still present.
Trailer tried with Defender - fault still present.
Trailer tried with Ford/Mitsubishi & a VW - No fault present.

What size resistors did you use?

When I had same problem I cured it by fitting a 7 way by pass relay, cost £15 from good motor factor or motor electrician/caravan workshop.

All I did was wired it up and used the indicator wire only and problem sorted instantly
A cheap fix that worked, I did do a post about it but not sure where it is.

Hope this helps

Andy

Thats a posh made up name for a waterproof box full of resistors. Laughing

So what’s the answer to this then?
Apart from the stupidly expensive box of resistors.

I’m in the middle of the issue myself as I’m converting our boat trailer to Waterproof LEDs that I can leave on and reverse in the water with.

I purchased some specific 6ohm resistors before I started the project.
The 12V ones here:
http://www.furneauxriddall.com/cgi-bin/sh0...LR12#aLR12

Without a resistor fitted the indicators flash constantly with the Canbus signal and the car doesn’t realise the trailer is plugged in as the dashboard trailer indicator lamp does not illuminate.

Fitting the resistors, in Parallel, causes the car to recognise the trailer is plugged in and the trailer indicator lamp illuminates.
But the indicators still flash constantly with the Canbus signal.

So we have two things to think about.
The car needs to see a higher resistance than the LEDs provide before it thinks a trailer is plugged in. This is what the Resistors do.
But the value of the normal Canbus/LED corrector resistors isn’t enough to stop the LEDs reacting to the Canbus signal.

Has anybody had any luck with higher value resistors?

Nasher.

Thanks Randylover, but need a bit more info.

You say you only connected the indicator wires.
Did you not connect the additional 12V supply that the bypass relays appear to need?
Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

I assume the car recognises the trailer is plugged in?

What make did you use?

Thanks

Nasher

Having the lights changed back to std bulbs as it's just way too much hassle trying to get this sorted.

Main issues involve use of 2 vehicles, both LR & 1 trailer.

How did you wire the relays? Just wondering since we use the trailer we upgraded to LED on 2 D3's without any problems.
