Digital torque wrench

I’m about, well within this coming week change my wheel bearings on the front, my old torque wrench does not go up to 235Nm so……

I’ve ordered a new digital torque wrench that goes up to 340Nm (ARM303-4A) so plenty to cover what I need but my question I have is……..

Can you get a battery operated torque gun where you can enter your own settings not an actual wrench?

Good afternoon,

I would have thought a gun was not a wise choice. The whole point of a wrench (bar) is you can approach the value slowly and smoothly, hearing the click (or ping) on approach.

To me, a gun would go hooning up to the value and likely overshoot!

I'd be interested to see if such a thing exists though.

During manufacture all car makers use digital torque wrenches not guns for the reasons already mentioned. Albeit a more sophisticated "big brother" version.

I'm not familiar with a ARM303-4A but 300Nm is the max you'll need on a D3.

I’ve seen them for tyres but at 6x settings just wondered if one was about as a wrench.

And I have a D4.

For interest only see Sykes -Pickavant Evotorque battery tools.
The EBT-83-4000 model will tighten to 4000Nm. That's 2950 lbf-ft.
Quite incredible and serious money.

To do the job properly the wrench should move continuously up to the required toque, any tendancy to stop/start should be avoided. It would be common to run out of travel just before the required torque was hit then take more than the target torque to get the bolt/nut moving again.

For the same reason re/check torquing standard bolts MUST involve backing them off then re applying the torque in the above manner. This obviously does not include stretch bolts which should normally be single use anyway.

We would only use click torque tools for smaller values with high numbers of repeating torques such as tank access panels (50+ countersunk screws). Single high values bolts would be done with a dial indicator wrench which in themselves would have the shortest calibration life of all our test equipment.

Engine bolts were a pain when they were deep inside a pylon, the wing bolts of a Viscount would take 3 days to get to them, an hour to check them and another 4 days to put everything back.
 A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.
