Recommendation for a Recon Engine/Engine Builder

Our D4 now at 158,000 miles has low oil pressure. Driving normally you’d never know but after a spirited drive the oil pressure light comes on. Had a pressure gauge on it and yes, confirmed the oil pressure is very low when the engine is warm. Oil pump is a month old and was replaced with a genuine Land Rover pump so reasonably confident it’s not an issue with the pump.

I’m looking at either a rebuilt engine, approaching someone to rebuild it or having a go myself. Was after any recommendations for a supplier of reconditioned engines or someone to rebuild my engine. I’m based in Lincoln but quite happy to transport the D4 across the country if needed.

Vehicle is beyond economical repair but we’ll only go and buy another and we’ve sorted loads of issues on this one so would rather stick with it!

Cheers all

Ironically the company who does all of the rebuilding for JLR is only down the road but they dont do private work.. Evil or Very Mad
OvalAutos in Cradley Heath seem to specialise in offering a refurb service if the engine can be saved - speak to Joe who I think was a member here - not sure if he still is, thats who Id talk to if i wanted my D4 lump rebuilding
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

Indeed they are and very good at the job, we use them for some work ! however they would not be able to help with this, as their contract with JLR wont let them

A JLR engine will be about 6.5-7 K and comes with 2yrs warranty! Then you need to factor in 4-6 K for the labour. Im afraid I would not be swayed by what I had already spent you need to be realistic as it never stops there ,the first loss is usually the cheapest . So unless your vehicle will be worth what you are spending at the end do you really want to be going there . Just to add dont think the work will make it worth more as it wont.

Just to add what makes you think its not the pump ? Your symptoms suggest it is . just because its new does not mean its ok and should be covered by warranty if a genuine pump.

I suppose it's your perception of value. At least your knows his D4 and if your willing to put a new engine in then you must value the car.

I'm in the same situation with my daughter's D3. It's done 165,000 miles but is in great condition. However, it needs the water pump replacing, a new from brake caliper, so that means discs and pads and also the timing belts doing. All in about £1700, or one third the value of the car. I'm going to do it but economically it makes no sense.

Have a look at NWS and see what they say also there is Q-Tech who people rate.

The argument between fixing this one/buying another...

If I can get this one back on the road for below £8k (up to £10k at a push) with a reputable engine rebuild I'm back to a known quantity. If I go out and spend £10k on another D4 I'll be buying someone else's problems and deferred maintenance inevitably having to spend a few quid to get it up to scratch. The new D4 may or may not also need an engine in the not too distant future.

Residual value isn't particularly important because we will often keep a vehicle until it's dead. Still on the fence about calling this one dead Laughing

Waiting for Duckworths to come back to me with the cost of a genuine engine, these now retail at nearly £8k +VAT, way over budget by the time you include fluids, gaskets, other broken parts etc...

Thanks for the other recommendations though, will continue to make some enquires and see what we can find!

Also be careful of falling into the trap of "it can't be xxxxx, I have only just replaced it".

More than once I have fixed a problem by replacing a "new" component. Most devices failure rates form a bathtub curve, relatively high failure rates as a new component but falling rapily (the tap end), settling to an acceptably low rate during normal service life then rising again at end of life (just after any warranty has run out).
A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Thats my feeling on this one! Certainly if you feel the engine is dead what do you have to lose pulling out the new pump and getting it checked out as you may be saving yourself many thousands. If it has lost a lot of pressure it may be best to remove the oil filter first and check for bits in it .

Just a word of warning to the OP there are many cowboys out there that may quote lower than the figures you have suggested , dont go there many have and regretted it .

I would suggest going to a reputable place that will check out the oil pump first and then do whatever work may be needed
