Thanks for the info, it wasn't making the noise when I bought it but had just had quite an extensive service not long before I did. My estimate of mileage of 1500 since oil and filter change is that an estimate but on the day I purchased it, my son drove it home, 100 miles and I drove my other car. He definitely put it through its paces and there wasn't a noise evident by the time we got home. This has developed in the 4 months I have owned it and it is annoying primarily with a certain trepidation for what might be on the horizon.
I will fill the fuel tank with proper diesel tonight and see if there is any change, it does seem worse since filling with cheap diesel and I am going to add some 2t oil as others have suggested this improves running, we shall see.
