After only covering 800 miles in my D3 and 25 miles after a cam belt change. My bottom end decided to give up. At the time being I can still move the vehicle under its own steam. Am I right in thinking I could just replace the crank or bottom end by dropping it from under the vehicle? Or will I need to replace the full engine?
Cheers guys.

I did take it to the local LR dealership for a second opinion. They said who ever did the timing did a good job. As soon as I got it home from the belt change I noticed it left oil on the drive which it never did before. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to sort it my self.

It’s just a small leak. The level has not dropped much at all. Previously there was no leak at all. The level is still within the right level to run the engine.

He is happy to stick a refurb engine in there for £5600. To be honest with £6000 already invested in the truck I’d rather do my self. I’m wondering if I could just replace the bottom end and give the engine a hell of a flush before sticking a new end on.

How do you know the cranks gone
You probably best fitting a LR engine at over £4000
And fit yourself

If it is the crank... and want to replace it.... it needs to be undone from its flywheel.
So you have to drop the gearbox first... then... remove the oil pan and oilpan frame, support from the mainbearings, big-ends...
everything in very thight space not much room to work there, all above your head..... heavy crank.... put it into its place again... all above your head.....
My advice.... body off..... job..... looks difficult, but it isn’t... really.... you just need a suitable a lift..
Low mileage JAG engine is an option.... i did it that way... fitted new bearings anyway, re use the LR oilpan and frame and there you go.. Best regards
Harold

While older oil pumps can break after a cam belt change and killing the engine, I have never heard of a crank shaft going as a result of a cam belt change.
Are you sure your crank has gone and it is not the oil pump housing that has failed - causing engine failure?

The oil casting had been upgraded. That is the annoying thing the engine had 128000 on the clock but I didn’t have a date for the last belt change. When I took it in the mechanic noticed that the oil pump was the revised one in there. So I didn’t need the belt change in the first place.
The noise is definitely the bottom end it’s been confirmed by Landrover another garage and RAC. Thanks for the advice guys so far. I take it no one has ever just replaced the bottom end then?
