New to the site and question on roof racks |
|
HI all I pickup my new to me D3 up next week. It doesnt have any roof bars or rails on it and I wish to get a roof rack. i Was looking for advice on a good roof rack. It will be used to carry 16ft canoe and a oz tent on top. Eventually it will be used for a roof tent.
There is a bewildering array out there. I quite like the lookof the safety devices style that follow the line and drop down on the front of the roof and have a wind jammer on the front.
A couple people have recommended Front runner but their ones seem to stick up at the front and dont have wind jammers.
I was after quite a low level one as I do a fair bit of green laning and may possibly look to take it to morroco in the next couple of years.
Over to you experts whats the crack with those racks ? Ali or steel any to avoid or any must haves ? In fact could I et away with rofo bars instead ? Many thanks

Hi Stu.
To start the Safety Devices offering is a rip off of the Prospeed rack.
As you’ve noted there are many options to choose from, be aware that LR ‘rate’ the roof at 75kg.
PROSPEED - on my 2nd & love it. Well engineered (steel), 250kg capacity, q to q uiet & fuel efficient
OEM/G4 - owned one, wouldn’t again, noisy, flimsy (all ally), -5-6 mpg, 75kg capacity.
FRONTRUNNER - owned one, great loadspace, noisy, - 3-4mpg, (Slimline II 300kg, Windcheetah 150kg). Add on wind deflector now available- should cut noise & improve fuel consumption).
(ALM HAS A USED ONE FOR SALE)
FLATDOG & Bearmach do versions personally I’d avoid the latter (have seen previous issues with quality).
Hannibal, Patriot & Big Country all do a similar version, all sturdier & load slats run fore-aft, all therefore quieter).
Direct 4x4 Explorer (55kg load), Goliath (NI load) & Troop (NI capacity) available from on eBay, steel, heavy & noisy also Fugly as IMHO.
Cargo Bear (NI capacity) - new to market, well made & modular.
There are also offerings from Land Rover Passion & 4x4Zone.
If I’m the market for a RT I have an immaculate ARB 1.4 available.
Hope this helps.
Paul. Paul.

I'm also looking for a roof rack.
To be specific, I'm looking for a single bar to act as a mount for an LED light bar allowing me to remove the bar when its needed.
I had a look through some of your suggestions 1967jester, but didn't see one that didn't cover most of the roof. Is there any others you can recommend?

You’ve answered your own question really, “not a rack but a bar”
OEM or Thule bars fit into the T/Track channel that sits on roof.
I’ve seen a lightbar ‘fixed’ further forward using a magnetic foot pack & some have had a bar made up that uses the forward fixing points above the driver/passenger.
Prospeed light bar would be a more permanent ‘fix’ Paul.
