DIY Error code reading
I've often bought a cable and download diagnostic software on my laptop for my other cars such as BMW for EM reads, EM clearing and programming etc but I'm wondering what the current cheapest and best options are available for my 08 Discovery 3 HSE. Thanks

The most respected tool used on here is the GAP IID BT. It's a dedicated LR tool which is "plug and play" and will interface with your Apple or Android phone or tablet. It's very small, very easy to use, and is easily carried with you, as well as being user and VIN locked for security.
Additional LR vehicles can be added for a moderate fee, or the Pro version is available for unlimited VIN access such as required in a LR workshop.
It's not cheap, but for most users it pays for itself very quickly and it has a very high re-sale value should you decide to move on. There are others out there but not all are dedicated LR tools which is important!!
Some of the other tools available include Hawkeye, Nancom, and at the less expensive end iCarsoft, and Autel amongst others. Not all are wireless either, and few will have the full module access and interface available with IID. (full live values, calibration's, Re-flash, CCF edit, service mode, adaptations, component run test, etc, etc.)
There might be free download stuff out there but I have only ever believed you get what you pay for, and freebie to me usually means inadequate.
The Gap IID comes up for sale regularly here on the forum if you keep an eye out, or visit either the Gap website, or LR parts suppliers such as Island 4x4.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
