Pressing the start/stop button at speed.
Hello,
Whilst I was moving forward slowly the other day in D, I pressed the start/stop button and the car immediately shut off. Wasn''t turning or going fast so not an issue...
So I was wondering what would happen if this was done at a higher speed? Has anyone done it?
I read that you have to hold it or press twice in 2-3 seconds (I think) but this is not what happened to me, just a quick press stopped the engine.
If this did happen at say 70mph, like a crazy passenger pressed it, I am thinking the brakes would require more effort to pull up, you might get a car in your boot, the steering would be "non-powered" but what about the steering lock - would that engage? if you are taking a bend.
Anyone tried it, have experience of it or are super brave or own an airfield to test it?
Cheers. In today's world, if you contribute something, you don't contribute enough. If you contribute nothing, you receive everything.

I suspect, but don't know, that it would be inhibited at higher speeds for the reasons you mention, the same as the park brake if just flicked on .

for safety reasons you wouldn't be able to?? it would be crazy if this function was available at high speed...
I can't speak for the Discovery but with my Audi A4 once travelling over a certain speed not sure what but we'll say 15mph. The start stop button would become inactive, as would the electronic brake.`

Yes, I think that might be the case for a quick press. I am sure I read that a long held press would shut it off regardless of speed.

If it did, the normally park mode is engaged automatically, at least on 8 speed models, that would not be goodJoined the BMWX5 45e group

Have also been told that if your doing 70mph in D and shift to R the gearbox just ignores you, I assume it stays in N. Apart from putting the reverse lights on. No Mad Max reverse gear stops but would give the tailgater something to think about.

I have previously tried pressing the start button whilst moving, but was probably only 10-15mph. The engine shut down, and wouldn't restart until I was completely stationary. This I considered dangerous and made mental note not to do it again. Think I'll try it again at 20 and see what happens
(we have a long farm lane down which to test such things)
The park brake from speed is 'entertaining' everyone should try it.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

2. Hit Stop/Start
3. Yank EPB

Might try it in my wife's while she isn't looking...time for a change!
Looking on the internet they (the cars they were using) do shut down after a long press at speed. Don't go into P though. That would be BAD.In today's world, if you contribute something, you don't contribute enough. If you contribute nothing, you receive everything.

Interesting. A few times, I’ve been stopped with the gear selector in neutral, and decided to stop the engine.
The start/stop button didn’t work, and I got a bong, and a message saying the car wasn’t in park.
But, that’s the gearbox in neutral, not drive. Not ever tried that!
