More swarf in the engine oil than i expected

Changed Moneypits engine oil today which is a annual occurrence. She's 57 plate with 142K on the clock & been serviced every year since new. Since the last oil change she has done a grand total of 1750 miles.

I was a little alarmed to see glittery swarf in the pan of the old engine oil. Is this normal? I can't remember seeing it on previous changes, although i'd never really made a point of looking, which i did on this occasion.

What do you guys think? Should I be concerned?

Well IMHO

That is trouble!
If it is not rattling, knocking yet, you can be lucky, IF you do not attempt to start it anymore, but tow it if needed moved.
And change your big-end’s and mainbearings before running it again...

If you change your bottom-end bearings, you have a very big chance that You can use it for another 140K

If you attempt to start (and run) it and its start knocking, you need a new crankshaft also...

New bottom end bearings are around 140 quid + work...
“New” or other engine (like a JAG) starts at 1400 quid plus, + materials and then the work....

My advice, do not run it, until you know what te problem is...
 Best regards
Harold

I’d do one of those sample things and make sure you put the bits in. I’m sure for the sake of a few quid they can tell you what metal it is so you can narrow down the potential failure Thumbs Up

Use a magnet to see if its steel or bearing material.

Hi.

Seems it's steel. What does that indicate?

Is it ALL steel? Or partially?

By the way... Bearings are Only on the innerside partial soft metal, the outer side is plain steel... if they spin they can produce also steel swarf..

If you cut your old filter in half/open, how much debris is there?

I'll dig the filter out the bin and take a look. There isn't currently any other sign of an issue. No unusual knocking etc.

Hate to say you don’t get a warning when the engine decides to pop it’s proverbial clogs. I’d just come off a roundabout in NW Norway, bounced round a bus and was thinking “she’s driving brilliantly”, then came the flap flap flap noise, luckily got into a decent lay-by. I’m sure the bus was laughing at me as it swept past. Big Cry Big Cry

That was it, she was toast. Sad

It seems to be all steel. On cutting the oil filter there is only the occasional glint of a glitter sized fleck on both the inside and outside.

Sorry but disagree Del - first heard mine going in East Sussex, had it confirmed by LR main dealer, then drove back up to Scotland via Bath before it finally let go at Lockerbie.

I'd be worried for you Skagg if that swarf came out with the oil, but all may not be lost yet. Have you replaced the oil pump? The pump gears are steel! Also, if the original pump is in place the case may have cracked and is about to let go, which would explain the non ferrous content.

If you have changed the oil pump for an original FoMoCo then its likely more serious issues are playing out.

Really hope its not, but wish you well with it.

Had the same experience with a spun bearing.. one second, runs beautifully, slowed down for a corner and one second later ... knock knock knock....

My filter was full of debris although.... maybe something else... either way, look inside before running it again....
